Justice 2.0: Burnout within the Criminal Justice System
“Burnout is not a personal failure” In this episode of Growth Uncut, Dr Sarah Lewis is joined by Dr Sinéad Meade, Lecturer in Applied Psychology and researcher specialising in prison officer wellbeing, occupational culture and relationships within correctional settings.Drawing on years of research with prison officers, Sinéad challenges us to think differently about burnout.Rather than asking why an individual officer is struggling, what happens when we look at the environment around them?Prison officers work within incredibly demanding conditions. Overcrowding, exposure to violence, organisational pressures, shift work and the emotional demands of the role can all take their toll. Yet cultures that value strength and resilience can also make it difficult for people to recognise when they need support, or feel safe enough to ask for it.Sarah and Sinéad explore why addressing this requires more than expecting individuals to become more resilient. It requires organisational responsibility, psychological safety, intelligent trust and meaningful support embedded into prison culture. In this episode, we explore:• Why burnout should be understood as a workplace phenomenon, not a personal failure• Emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced feelings of accomplishment• How burnout can affect relationships with colleagues, families and people in prison• Why prison officers adapt their approach depending on their environment, circumstances and support• The importance of making help-seeking feel like a strength, rather than a weakness• How small, intentional changes can begin to shift workplace culture• Why research needs to move beyond academia and into everyday practiceSinéad also shares the story behind a pilot mental health and wellbeing campaign developed alongside prison leaders, including “Let’s Brew This” coffee mornings, using something as simple as putting the kettle on to create opportunities for connection and conversation☕💚The conversation also turns to the Champions Community, which Sinéad is currently evaluating. Bringing together prison professionals across different European countries, the programme explores how leadership, relationships and shared learning can contribute to positive occupational culture change.Sinéad will be sharing findings from this work at the European Justice Education & Leadership Summit in Vienna. At the heart of this episode is an important reminder:We cannot place the responsibility for surviving difficult environments solely on the people working within them. If we want people to thrive, we have to create the conditions that make thriving possible🌱🌱 Learn moreGrow, Transform, Belonghttps://www.growtransformbelong.comJoin us in ViennaHear more from Sinéad and explore the findings from the Champions Community at the European Justice Education & Leadership Summit, taking place 17–18 September 2026 in Vienna.🎟️ Book your place:https://www.tickettailor.com/events/richtungswechsel2/2174740🔔 Join the conversation✔ Watch the full episode✔ Share it with someone working in prisons, leadership or staff wellbeing✔ Subscribe to Growth Uncut for more conversations exploring the people, relationships and cultures shaping the future of justiceBecause supporting prison staff shouldn't begin when someone reaches breaking point.Healthy people need healthy cultures around them💚#Justice2Point0 #PrisonOfficers #StaffWellbeing #Burnout #PrisonCulture #Leadership #MentalHealth #CultureChange
