PREP Talks Episode 013 - Drew Mitchell: Sport for Life and Physical Literacy

In Episode 013, I sit down with a long-time friend, Drew Mitchell, to discuss the importance of physical activity and overall physical literacy amongst our youth. Living through a global pandemic the past year has amplified the concerns around both physical and mental health. Physical activity has declined while mental health issues have increased. We identify some of the key environments for promoting physical literacy and discuss the importance of working with schools for providing resources and programming around fitness, play, sport and general physical activity. Drew also points out that the competitive sports model isn’t for everyone, and may only serve a small minority of kids, while alienating the larger youth population. Resources must be provided a multiple levels, reaching teachers, coaches, parents, recreation centers, sport organizations and kids. COVID-19 has made it difficult to implement a lot of these programs in person, but has also created other opportunities for disseminating useful resources for all groups. Drew Mitchell is the Director of Physical Literacy for the Sport for Life Society and works as a consultant focused on the development of physical literacy at the community level and promoting the Canadian Sport for Life Movement. He is a graduate of Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Drew has worked extensively in the sport system as an educator and developer of programs for the past 19 years. He managed Sport Technical and Performance Services for viaSport BC and was the Manager of Science & Medicine programs for SportMedBC where he worked with over 50 different sports at the local, provincial and national level. He is also a past member of the Canadian National Canoeing Team and the former Health & Lifestyle Coordinator at the Downtown Vancouver YMCA. Drew has been involved in sport and fitness for over 40 years as an athlete, coach, administrator, volunteer, developer and manager. PREP Talks Episode 012 - Fergus Connolly: Lessons in Lifelong Learning

In Episode 012, I had the pleasure of meeting up once again with Fergus Connolly to discuss his thoughts on education and learning in the field of sport performance and, quite honestly, any field in modern times. We discuss the traits of great leaders and mentors, and the importance of communication and critical thinking. But having good teachers is not enough. A reduction in opportunities for social interaction in educational settings has also been a problem for young people in the last few years, with students having less one-on-one opportunities with teachers and mentors. When teachers have an opportunity to spend quality time with students and apprentices, more than just information will be passed on and consumed. Within organizations, there is also a need to improve social interactions amongst practitioners to enhance their overall synergy as a performance and medical team. Sometimes these organizations need a professional consultant external to their team to come in and facilitate better communication and improved efficiency internally, taking advantage of the expertise already present within an organization. And, finally, organizing your own teaching materials into a presentation or a course forces you to really rethink your approach and examine your philosophy in a critical manner. In a way, it is an internal knowledge audit that all of us should do on a regular basis. Dr. Fergus Connolly is one of the world's leading experts in team sport and human performance. His highly acclaimed book Game Changer is the first blueprint for coaches to present a holistic philosophy for winning in all team sports. Fergus is the only coach to have worked full time in every major league around the world. He helps teams win at the highest level with the integrated application of best practices in all areas of performance. Fergus has served as Director of Elite Performance for the San Francisco 49ers, Sports Science Director with the Welsh Rugby Union, and Performance Director for University of Michigan Football. He has guided coaches, support staff and players in the NBA, Australian Rules Football and international cricket. Fergus has also trained world boxing champions and advises elite military units and companies across the globe. PREP Talks Episode 007 - Tommy Christian: Boosting Performance with Passion and Precision

In Episode 007, we sit down with Tommy Christian, coach and owner at TC Boost based in the Greater Chicago, Illinois area. Tommy tells us about his career as a Division 1 football player at Northwestern University at the linebacker position, and how his training allowed him to play at a very high level. However, a significant injury halted his football career and he was forced to fall back on his academic accomplishments as a mechanical engineer. After almost 5 years working successfully in the engineering field, Tommy made the decision to get back into sports and take an unpaid internship at Northwestern University. To some, it would seem to be a crazy decision to leave a good paying career and change lanes into what one may consider a less stable and less lucrative career. But Tommy jumped in with both feet and instantly knew it was the right decision. After working several years as a university speed coach, Tommy made the transition to opening his own business and creating a path with TC Boost and hasn’t looked back. He has found ways to grow the business and endure hard times with the recent COVID pandemic. Tommy’s story provides a great message about following your passions and executing them with precision. Tommy Christian, Director of Training, is one of the top sports performance coaches in the country. He is the former Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning for Northwestern University (2000–2002). For the past ten years he has lead the Northwestern University football team’s speed development program, achieving a resume of experience and results that are unmatched in the Chicago-land area. Tommy was also the former starting inside linebacker for the Wildcats under Coach Gary Barnett (1992). During his playing career at Northwestern he was the top Iron Cat point winner for his combination of speed, strength, explosiveness, and stamina. Because of his background, Tommy has an extraordinary ability to assimilate data, analyze it logically, and combine it with the knowledge he’s acquired from his own experience in sports to create results-driven training programs. In addition, he also consults with the strength and conditioning staff to assist in speed development of all the university’s athletic programs. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Tommy also holds the Etcheberry Certification for Tennis. PREP Talks Episode 006 - Doug Kechijian: Tactical and Practical Education

In Episode 006, we are joined by Doug Kechijian to talk about the lessons learned through his education in both the military and the more conventional academic path for physical therapy school. We discuss the roles of both a practical based, hands-on education and one involving a conventional classroom setting and more theoretical approaches. With the last year of lockdowns and limiting social gathering, education has taken a more distanced approach with less hands-on learning involved. We ask Doug if we can integrate the best of both worlds to make sure that students receive a complete education under these circumstances and in the near future. We also wonder if this can be accomplished using ‘virtual’ techniques and technology, with brick and mortar educational setups being a thing of the past. This interview is a must listen for anyone involved in education and professional development for agile professionals. Doug Kechijian is a physical therapist and CEO and co-founder of Resilient Performance Systems. Resilient seeks to systematically explore the continuum between acute rehabilitation and athletic performance. Resilient’s clientele includes athletes and operators from Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), professional mixed martial arts, X Games, Winter and Summer Olympics, Major League Lacrosse (MLL), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), federal law enforcement tactical teams, military special operations forces, and those with a history of persistent pain and extensive surgical backgrounds. Resilient also advises organizations about medical and performance staffing, program development, and injury risk mitigation strategies. Before beginning his sports medicine practice, Doug was a Pararescueman in the U.S. Air force where he deployed throughout the world to help provide technical rescue capability and emergency medical care to U.S and allied forces. He is a nationally certified paramedic with advanced training in emergency, trauma, and wilderness medicine. In 2015, he was selected as one of the U.S. Air Force’s Outstanding Airmen of the Year. Doug received his AB in Biology from Brown University and MA in Exercise Physiology/Doctor of Physical Therapy from Columbia University. PREP Talks Episode 005 - Carl Valle: An Education On Sport Technology

In Episode 005, Carl Valle joins us to discuss the nuances of sport technology. While COVID-19 has forced us to use technology for communication, remote instruction and contact tracing, it has also given us time to examine what types of technology are providing the highest return on investment. Certainly, acquisition of new equipment and technology can be an exciting time with the hope and expectation of more robust data collection and problem solving. But many times, technology can easily distract us from the reality occurring in front of our own eyes, slowly stealing us of valuable time that could be dedicated to proven conventional practices. Carl gives us some insight into how to make wiser decisions around technology acquisition and application in sport settings. Coach Valle has coached Track and Field at every level, from high school to the Olympic level in the sprints and hurdles. He has had the privilege of working with great athletes that have been All-American and school record holders. PREP Talks Episode 004 - Erick Kozlowski: Athletic Training from Albuquerque to Air Force Academy

In Episode 004, we are joined by the Head Athletic Trainer for the US Air Force Academy Football program, Erick Kozlowski. Erick begins our discussion by outlining his early years in school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and how it influenced the early part of his career. Between working in a university environment, a high school setting and then learning the ropes within a pro sport organization, Erick had many distinct influences and mentors to help form his vision of a career in Athletic Training. But much of Erick’s career has been moulded within the confines of the US Air Force Academy located in Colorado. We quickly understand that Erick has worked hard to establish strong relationships with colleagues, coaches and student athletes at the Academy. In particular, his close work with the Strength and Conditioning staff is central in providing the best possible treatment progressions as part of the return-to-play process, as well as providing an overall supportive environment for student athletes from the training room, to the weight room and the playing field. Erick is a true professional contributing to the overall robust educational experience of cadets at the Academy. Erick Kozlowski started at USAFA in 1998 and became the Head Athletic Trainer for Football for the 2014 season. For 15 years, Kozlowski was the athletic trainer for the successful US Air Force Academy wrestling team. Kozlowski came to the US Air Force Academy from the University of New Mexico, where he was the assistant athletic trainer and director of the CAAHEP Approved Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. In 1995, he received his master's degree in sports administration from UNM after receiving his bachelor's degree in athletic training from UNM in 1989. Kozlowski has also served as head athletic trainer at Santa Fe (N.M.) High School and worked with the Texas Rangers Baseball Club (rookie league) in Port Charlotte, Fla. He has been a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) since 1989 and is a member of USA Wrestling and the Volunteer Sports Medicine Program with the United States Olympic Committee. He received advanced credentials in Orthopedic Rehab and Sports Performance Dry Needling (2016), Performance Enhancement Specialist (2005) and a Corrective Exercise Specialist (2007) from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). PREP Talks Episode 003 - Justin Wickard: Choosing Your Path, Getting on Track, Finding Your Lane

In Episode 003, we have the pleasure of speaking with sprint coach and speed consultant, Justin Wickard. The bulk of Justin’s career has been as a university Track and Field coach providing instruction in sprints, hurdles and relays. However, Justin has made a profound career change stepping away from the college sport environment and entering the world of private business, offering his expertise to athletes outside of a school-based setting. The timing of his career pivot could not be at a more tenuous time – during a global pandemic – which speaks to his passion, dedication and confidence around the choice that he has made. While we spend a lot of time discussing the importance of learning and education in preparing us for our careers, sometimes jumping into a scenario with both feet and learning by doing is one of the most expedient means of growing your experience and testing your competence. Justin’s story is a perfect example of imposing situational learning on oneself to drive growth and success. While Justin’s choice is not necessarily the path for the risk averse, it does provide us with the motivation to explore other options for career development, personal growth and continuing education outside of conventional methods. Justin Wickard is the owner and operator of Tier1Athlete, LLC based in Fort Worth, Texas. He has previously worked as an assistant coach for the track and field team at the US Air Force Academy. Wickard, who joined the Falcons’ staff in October 2018, was in charge of developing the Academy’s sprinters and hurdlers. Wickard previously worked for five seasons at TCU as a sprints and hurdles coach. In his final season with the Horned Frogs, Wickard helped guide the men’s 4x400-meter relay to an indoor time of 3:04.25 that broke a 34-year-old school record, and saw Derrick Mokaleng break the outdoor school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.02. During his tenure in Fort Worth, he also had the opportunity to help coach Ronnie Baker, who was the top 100-meter sprinter in the world at one point during the 2018 season. Prior to joining TCU, Wickard served on the coaching staffs at Louisiana Tech, North Carolina, Chadron State and Texas Tech. Wickard is a 2006 graduate of Utah State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, with an emphasis in health and wellness. A member of the Aggies’ track and field team, he was a three-time West Region qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles and advanced to the NCAA Championships in that event. In addition, he competed at in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2006 USA Indoor Championships. PREP Talks Episode 002 - Bob Alejo: Making Good Choices Around Education and Careers in 2021

In Episode 002 of the Hansen PREP Talks, we sit down with veteran coach and performance professional, Bob Alejo. Because of Bob’s extensive experience throughout the world of athletic performance and Strength & Conditioning, he offers both a broad and transparent view on all topics related to education, professional development and career management in the sport performance world. We discuss the impact that the global pandemic has had on sports in general and how coaches – young and old – may be taking pause to examine their current career path, as well as choices around education and growth. For the younger generation of coaches, Bob emphasizes the need to manage your financial situation first and foremost. Decisions around internships, volunteer work and entry level positions must be evaluated with both career and life goals in mind. While we all have had aspirations about working at the highest levels of performance, a pragmatic approach to career development and financial security must also be part of the decision making process. Coach Alejo also stresses the importance of continually expanding and maintaining a network of professional peers and mentors to not only help guide your decision making, but also serve as references for career opportunities. The value of the recommendations provided by Coach Alejo cannot be understated in the current and post-pandemic environment. Bob Alejo is currently serving as the Assistant Athletic Director of Strength and Conditioning at California State University Northridge. Previously, he was the Director of Sports Science for Power Lift, where he handled the day-to-day discussion about athletic performance and the science surrounding it. Prior to that, he served as the Assistant AD/Director of Strength and Conditioning at North Carolina State from 2011-17 where he served the entire Wolfpack athletic department and was part of two NCAA Sweet Sixteen teams in men's basketball. From 2009-2011, Coach Alejo served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Oakland Athletics, a position he also held from 1993-2001 which included the Moneyball period. During his 12-year role he was responsible for all aspects of the organization's year-round physical preparation at both the major league and minor league levels. Prior to rejoining the A's, Alejo was the Director of Strength and Conditioning at UC Santa Barbara from 2005-2008. From 1984-1993, Alejo served as a strength and conditioning coach at UCLA where he worked with 23 men's and women's teams.
