Kicked Out: Queer Youth w/ Sassafras Patterdale
<p>In this episode Calpi, Clay & Todd talk with Queer & Genderqueer Author, Dog Trainer & Freelance Writer Sassafras (Lowrey) Patterdale. Their first book, Kicked Out, is an anthology written by & about the experiences of unhoused queer youth. When Kicked Out was first published back in 2010 around 40% of unhoused youth openly identified as LGBTQ+. In the face of the recent Grants Pass v Johnson ruling and aggressive rollback of civil rights for BIPOC, trans, and queer people, we find ourselves terrified over what the youth not face.</p><br><p>Hard Left News is community supported. Sassafras’ work regularly appears in leading magazines/publications, and Sassafras has taught queer storytelling workshops at colleges, conferences, bookstores, festivals, and squats from Atlanta to Berlin to NYC to Oakland to Amsterdam. <p>In this Bonus episode of Hard Left News Calpi & Todd had an important talk with Author, Educator & Activist Race Bannon. We all discussed Race’s most recent book, his history of activism, politics & direct action, fascism and what that means for the kink, queer, trans and non-binary communities, as well as vetting and creating safer spaces.</p><br><p>Race Bannon has been an organizer, writer, publisher, educator, commentator, leader, speaker, and activist in the LGBTQ, leather/kink, polyamory, and HIV/STI prevention realms since 1973. He is an author, widely published writer, active speaker, community organizer and project leader, and has received numerous national and local awards. Race is one of the authors and editors of a new book, Kink Is, highlighting kinksters from around the world set to be published by Unbound Edition Press in September 2024.
