[…] And also, simultaneously, we see that Graham is trying to capture the wonder of seeing the world through a child's eyes. So we have both viewpoints, parent and child in one. The character of Toad, or Toadie, Mr Toad, who is reckless and impulsive, as a young boy would be, is inspired by Alistair, who would stomp about when he didn't get his own way. But so, I believe, is the character of Mole, who is naive and innocent, and trying to find his way in a new world full of wonder. Whilst the character of Badger, the quiet, stoic figure of authority, and the character of Ratty, the cultivated, sensible, diligent, working professional, I think they are supposed to be an amalgamation of Kenneth Graham himself.
