A journey through the American South, one conversation at a time.
Harley Conversations is a documentary project exploring the people, places and stories behind the American South — from riders and musicians to farmers, mechanics, business owners and people whose lives rarely make the headlines.
The podcast features weekly featured conversations with a selection of people encountered along the way, alongside occasional letters from the road that reflect on the odyssey as it makes its way through the South.
Honest, unfiltered and curious, these are conversations about America, its people and the changing world around them.
The journey starts on October 5, 2026.

Asheville in North Carolina has been dubbed the San Francisco of Appalachia. In this episode of the Harley Conversations, Guy meets business owners and creative folk to test this thesis. He also considers a very particular type of capitalism at work in this part of Western North Carolina (WNC)- one that seems beneficent, and designed to help people to help themselves.
He also meets bikers at a toy-run rally - an event to gather presents and raise money for disadvantaged children throughout the WNC region.

Wilkesboro in North Carolina is a cradle of American motorsport - NASCAR started here, and so did American lawn-mower racing.
In this episode, Guy Kiddey visits the North Wilkesboro Speedway and meets Graig Hoffman who runs the track. He talks to two pillars of the Wilkesboro mower-racing community, Andy Soots and Dale Burr, about the sport's past and present. He also speaks to Pontus Ohlsson of Black River Delta, the Swedish blues-rock band whose music provides the soundtrack to the Harley Conversations odyssey.

Inspired by the late Alistair Cooke's Letter from America, this radio letter considers the demise of the American dream - and what is happening to American men as their individual dreams become less their own, and more those of societal power structures and the illusions, even delusions, of social media.

Heart of Appalachia

Many listeners will have read, or at least know about, JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. This work portrays the people of Appalachia is a less-than-flattering light.
In this episode, I ride my Harley-Davidson in the depths of eastern Kentucky to see for myself what life is like in this beautiful but extremely poor part of America.
All too often, journalists, if they even bother to come come here at all, are in search of sensationalism. But sensationalism comes from stereotypes, and stereotypes only ever hold a grain of truth.
In stark contrast to the bleakness of much of this typical coverage, the stories you’re about to hear are overwhelmingly positive. They are stories of Appalachia’s environmental flourishing that would seem to echo the resilience and capacity for reinvention of the people who live in this part of America.
