   PUT ON SACKCLOTH AND LAMENT

That was a “let's-get-right-into-it" start to our new series in Joel last Sunday, wasn’t it?! Hard-hitting, for sure. And it doesn’t ease up too much for the second message on Joel 1:13-20 (https://biblia.com/bible/esv/joel/1/13-20), as we look at what it means to be truly repentant. Sorrow, desperate prayer, and a proper fear of judgment are all in play. But so is the confidence that we can go to our God with our dilemma. The passage seems dark and difficult but brims with hope, as the prophet reminds us of God’s grace and mercy, praying, “To you, O LORD, I call.” We have no other recourse. And he is there waiting for us to approach him. What love he has for his people! I can’t wait to work through that with you on Sunday. See you online or in person. Series: Shock & Awe: The Prophecy of Joel Message: 2 – Put On Sackcloth and Lament Text: Joel 1:13-20 Todd Dugard Harvest Bible Chapel October 4, 2026 Repentance is agreeing with God and turning from my way to his. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we pretend to be unable to understand it because we know that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly. – Søren Kierkegaard When my sin against God is brought to light, I’ll repent… …with deep sorrow (v. 13) Lament is different. The practice of lament—the kind that is biblical, honest, and redemptive—is not as natural for us, because every lament is a prayer. A statement of faith. Lament is the honest cry of a hurting heart wrestling with the paradox of pain and the promise of God’s goodness. – Mark Vroegop, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy Lament is a prayer in pain that leads to trust. – Mark Vroegop, Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy Crying is all right in its way while it lasts; but you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do. – C. S. Lewis, The Silver Chair 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 …desperate to seek him in prayer (v. 14) …properly fearing his judgment (v. 15-18) Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve. Mercy is God not giving us what we do deserve. 1 Corinthians 11:30-32 …yet confidently approaching him (v. 19-20) He who sends the storm, steers the vessel. – Thomas Adam, Private Thoughts on Religion and Other Subjects Connected With It God will either give us what we ask or give us what we would have asked if we knew everything he knows. – Tim Keller Hebrews 4:16 ––––– RESOURCES: Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament by Mark Vroegop https://a.co/d/0hX8ZBHf (https://a.co/d/0hX8ZBHf)

   AWAKE, YOU DRUNKARDS

What if God decides that the only way to get my attention is shock and awe? The phrase is a military term coined in the 1990s and refers to a strategy to achieve rapid dominance on the battlefield. As it might relate to the Christian life, which is itself a battlefield, God is patient to an extreme with my obstinate ways, but he certainly reserves the right to act decisively to confront me if it suits his will and ultimately works to my benefit. That, in essence, is the word that the prophet Joel preached to the people of Israel. This eight-message series will take us verse-by-verse through the Book of Joel to examine God’s coming judgment on the world and the only hope we have through Jesus Christ to receive his grace instead. God got the people of Israel’s attention through shock and awe. Will he get our attention too? Series: Shock & Awe: God's Coming Judgment and Our Only Hope (The Prophecy of Joel) Message: 1 – Awake, You Drunkards Text: Joel 1:1-12 Todd Dugard Harvest Bible Chapel September 27, 2026 When all hell is breaking loose around me, it’s time to… …listen to God. (v. 1-2) Hebrews 12:25a …warn others. (v. 3-4) …accept the reality of it. (v. 5-7) What impairs my response to God? 1) Substance abuse 2) Indifference 3) Distraction 4) Unhealthy relationships 5) Ambition 6) Passions God often punishes men, and it behooves them to be attentive as soon as he raises a finger…You must be more than stupid if you perceive not that you were smitten by God’s hand. – John Calvin, Commentaries 14 & 15 Hebrews 12:5b-6 Hebrews 12:11 John 16:33 James 1:2-3 Acts 5:41 2 Corinthians 12:10 More than anything else could ever do, the gospel enables me to embrace my tribulations and thereby position myself to gain full benefit from them…When I view my circumstances in this light, I realize the gospel is not just one piece of good news that fits into my life somewhere among all the bad. I realize that the gospel makes genuinely good news out of every other aspect of my life, including my severest trials. – Milton Vincent, A Gospel Primer for Christians …grieve the losses. (v. 8-10) …regret that it came to this. (v. 11-12) Resource: A Gospel Primer for Christians https://a.co/d/0hClYMe6 (https://a.co/d/0hClYMe6)

THE LORD HAS DONE THIS – AND HE IS NOT DONE

We’re privileged to have Joel and Jill Anderson with us this weekend to help us celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Joel has served in pastoral ministry for more than 30 years in church planting, leadership development, pastoral care, and since 2017 as Lead Pastor of Flagstaff Bible Church in the beautiful mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona. This weekend carries some special history. He and I were young, green church planters together in 2001, launching our first churches within months of one another and remaining close through the joys, bruises, and changing seasons of ministry ever since. This is Joel’s fourth time preaching here at Harvest Barrie. A graduate of Wheaton College and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in the Chicago area, Joel has increasingly come to appreciate the saying, “God uses crooked sticks to draw straight lines.” He would be quick to count himself among the crooked sticks—grateful that the usefulness of a life rests far more on God’s grace than on the impressiveness of the person. He’s a great fit with the “mob of misfits” we have here at Harvest. Joel married his high school sweetheart, Jill—their story began, appropriately enough, in chemistry class. Jill also teaches the Bible and serves actively in women’s ministry. Together they have five grown daughters and one son-in-law, now scattered into their own adventures and vocations. Joel loves the outdoors, his companion Olso (a retired sled dog), good coffee, people in measured doses, and the enduring hope of Hebrews 6:9, “Beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you.” He was invited to this weekend because his love for God’s Word oozes from every pore as he preaches. I’m glad you’ll get to experience that.
