We elect the District Attorney (DA) to speak for the victims of crimes and seek justice for them. But what happens when the DA won't fight for ALL victims?
We are exploring plea deals in Travis County. The DA's office is hyper focused on prosecuting police and conservatives, pouring resources into those cases, but is not speaking for other victims and their families. Probation for killing people, murder charges dropped, light sentences agreed to without first consulting victims and their families are just some of the examples that begs the question "Has justice really been served?"
Heidi Broussard and her fiance Shane welcomed their baby girl, Margot, in the fall of December 2019. A few weeks later, Heidi and Margot went missing.
Margot was found alive at the Houston home of Heidi's long time friend, Magen Fieramusca. Heidi was found murdered at the residence. The Travis County District Attorney cut a deal with Magen, which kept her from facing life without the possibility of parole.

Missing in Austin: The case of Krislyn Gibson and Sidney Taylor
In April 2016, two friends traveled to Austin from Houston to attend a music festival.
After returning to the home of an acquaintance, they were never seen again. They have never been found.
In 2020, a grand jury heard the evidence of this case and wanted the acquaintance, Harvey Cyphers, prosecuted for murder. Jose Garza's office thought different.

Buried in the backyard: The murder of Nicklas Kinslow
On August 18, 2020, a woman called police to report a body was buried in the backyard of a south Austin home.
Homicide detectives began their investigation into the claim. With the help of crime scene personnel, Austin Fire Department, and staff from the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, the body of a man (whose identity was later confirmed as Nicklas Kinslow) was unearthed from a grave constructed in the backyard.
Two people would eventually be charged with murder, but the Travis County District Attorney's office would later drop the murder charges and allow both defendants to plead to lesser charges.

Deadly Roads: The murder of Miranda Lopez
This podcast will explore criminal cases in Travis County, Texas, and the subsequent plea deals the defendants made with the district attorney's office.
In this first episode, we will talk about the murder of 21-year old Miranda Lopez, who was gunned down the day after Christmas 2020 while driving home with her sister after an outing.
Two men were ultimately charged with her death. In March 2023, the district attorney's office gave one of the alleged suspects a plea deal.
We will hear from Miranda's family as they share their loss and their experience navigating the criminal justice sentence seeking justice for Miranda.
The case and plea deal will be presented and the audience can decide for themselves if justice has been served.
