[…] So by 1919, segregation was set in stone. Segregation was a federal law under Plessey versus Ferguson. And like earlier, when we talked about the difference between Southern racism and the racism that existed in other regions. Many of these northern and western states did not have explicit Jim Crow laws. But via de facto segregation, they implemented several programs and social norms to maintain segregation and discrimination with things like redlining. We've talked about redlining on this podcast before, the practice of denying mortgages and loans and insurance to certain races or ethnicities so that you could maintain the whiteness of a neighborhood.
