What if you became something monstrous—and remained human enough to remember everything?
This week on Hauntmates, Jeffrey and Mallory trace the roots of werewolf folklore through medieval tales of stolen skins, cursed bodies, and betrayal. From Bisclavret’s stolen clothing to the wolves of Ossory and Melion’s enchanted ring, these stories imagine people trapped in animal bodies, with someone else holding their only way home.
Then we step into the present with unsettling reports of upright canine figures near homes, woodland paths, and quiet backyards. We separate the old legends from modern, unverified Dogman claims while exploring the fear that connects them: something familiar becoming impossible to recognize.

EP:44 Appalachian folklore the rules you don't break pt.2
Rule number two: just because someone is dead doesn’t mean they’ve left. And if you wake up with something sitting on your chest, you might want to reconsider leaving that window open.
In Part Two of our Appalachian folklore series, we’re moving out of the woods and into the places that are supposed to feel safe. We’re talking about haints, the dead who refuse to leave, and the witch who rides you at night. What happens when a restless spirit makes itself at home? Why do stories of nighttime visitors sound so much like sleep paralysis? And why should you leave the broom alone once the sun goes down?
Along the way, we explore the warnings, household customs, and stories that turn an ordinary night into something a little less comfortable. Because sometimes the strange noise isn’t coming from the forest—it’s coming from the next room. Put down the broom, pull up the covers, and try not to think too hard about that empty chair in the corner.

EP:43 Lizzie Borden
Did Lizzie Borden really take an axe? In this episode of Hauntmates, Jeffrey digs into the 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, the evidence against Lizzie, and why a jury found her not guilty. We also separate the real case from the “40 whacks” rhyme and Netflix’s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
Then we step inside the Borden house: what visitors say they’ve experienced, which stories are hard to verify, and why the house remains a destination for ghost hunters.
Was Lizzie guilty, wrongly accused, or has the most important part of the story been lost to legend?
