Episode 6 - A Midnight Clear (1992) with Billy Ray Brewton

A Christmas war movie that's actually more about coming of age in the shadow of death, Keith Gordon's A Midnight Clear casts Ethan Hawke as the leader of a squad of at-the-time rising stars, in what might be the first great performance of his career. It's also the first showcase of his natural ability with voiceover, most famously effective in First Reformed. This month, we're joined by Screen Drafts legend and host of The Incinerator podcast, Billy Ray Brewton! Topics include war movies of the '90s, how writer-director Keith Gordon subverts genre expectations, and fantasy casting Hawke as Jason Voorhees! "Heavy Metal Cinephile" riffage this month is 'Disposable Heroes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYaRQKF0mpk)' by Metallica. Episode 5 - Alive (1993) with Conor O'Donnell

Your hosts survive a plane crash in the Andes, trying to make meagre rations last without resorting to eating our special guest Conor O' Donnell (The B-Side) and get a gruesome camp fire story from the host of Filmmaker Magazine's Back to One podcast, Peter Rinaldi. Topics include the adaptation of a true life story, the on-screen depiction of cannibalism, plane crash movies, the zen calm (too calm?) of Ethan Hawke's performance as the anchor of a would-be prestige picture, and the films of Director Frank Marshall—which is really just an excuse for Timothy to sermonise the popcorn blockbuster masterpiece that is Congo! "Heavy Metal Cinephile" riffage this month is 'So Damn Cool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A6g5At10Cs)' by Ugly Kid Joe. Episode 4 - Mystery Date (1991) with the Shakespeare Sisters

Ethan Hawke is floppy-haired perfection in this imperfect one crazy night movie, that turned out to be a little too crazy for our filmmaker sibling guests, the Shakespeare Sisters (Soundtrack to Sixteen, Much Ado). Topics include the one time Ethan Hawke was a teen movie lead, disagreements on Hawke's chemistry with co-star Terri Polo, and why for our guests, Hawke's character's conniving brother played by Brian McNamara is the more charming of the two. One Crazy Night/Teen Movies discussed this episode: Before Sunrise, Soundtrack to Sixteen, Much Ado, After Hours, Into the Night, 8 Days a Week, Superbad Dazed and Confused, Can't Hardly Wait, Trojan War, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Some Kind of Wonderful, Better Off Dead, Not Another Teen Movie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Career Opportunities, Dawson's Creek, The Graduate. "Heavy Metal Cinephile" riffage this month is 'Caved In' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHIeRye5H3g) by Spite. *Apologies about the sound quality on our guests' end! We did what we could, and things improve as the episode progresses. Episode 3 - Juliet, Naked (2018)

In only our second film on a podcast obsessively covering the work of a single actor, we're talking about when fandom goes too far. JULIET, NAKED sees the Hawke in delightfully dishevelled form, and as a romantic comedy, its charm is matched by deceptive depth. Topics include Hawke's character Tucker Crowe as a later-in-life version of Troy Dyer, fictional rockstars not having the tunes to support their legend, musical gatekeeping and the Nick Hornby rom-com cottage industry. Episode 2 - Reality Bites (1994)

We’re kicking off our journey into Ethan’s oeuvre with the film that made Hawke the cinematic face of Generation X, and for the next few years, a pin-up leading man. It’s a testament to Hawke’s then-emerging star power, pop cultured charisma, and slacker hotness, that the character of Troy Dyer, an uncompromisingly self-absorbed, “24-hour-a-day taste fascist” remains one of his most enduring and fondly remembered. Topics include the cultural moment of the film’s production, a soundtrack arguably bigger than the film itself, how a script written by a twenty-three-year-old sounds today, and of course, Winona forever!
