In Episode 46 of Healed to Heal, Kathleen Johnson welcomes author and brain tumor survivor Ayis Caperonis for an honest conversation about rebuilding his life, twenty years of depression, and the faith that helped him keep moving forward.
After experimental surgery, Ayis faced the loss of his motor skills and a future that looked nothing like the one he had imagined. Doctors told his family he might never walk unaided or live a typical life. Yet he went on to complete his education, marry, and become a father of three.
Alongside those milestones was another struggle—one others couldn’t always see.
Ayis shares what depression felt like, a turning point during rehabilitation, and the small “specks of light” that helped him hold on to hope. He reflects on his marriage, the people who supported him, and why he now writes to encourage others.

When Healing Doesn’t Happen: What Can We Really Conclude?
What do we conclude when we pray for healing and the person is still suffering? It’s a painful question, and the answer we reach can shape what we believe about God.
In Matthew 17, a father brought his son to Jesus’ disciples, but they could not heal him. That was a real and heartbreaking outcome. Yet it was not the end of the story. Jesus healed the boy, and the disciples came to Him to ask why they had been unable to help
In this episode, Kathleen invites us to bring our conclusions back to Scripture. Through the father’s story, Israel’s failure to enter the promised land, and Jesus’ response to the man born blind, she considers the danger of filling in what we cannot see. An outcome tells us what happened; it does not give us complete knowledge of why it happened or what God was willing to do.
Kathleen also shares the grief of losing her father to pancreatic cancer. This conversation is meant to encourage those who are hurting, not to assign blame. “I Couldn’t Find You—You’ll Have to Find Me”: Susan Bosma’s Encounter with Jesus
In 1974, Susan Bosma was a young mother preparing for surgery. She attended church, taught Sunday school, and knew about Jesus—but she did not yet know Him personally.
Confronted with the possibility of death, Susan offered God a startlingly honest prayer:
“If You’re there, I don’t believe it. And if I die and go to hell, at least I’ll have the satisfaction of telling You I couldn’t find You. You’ll have to find me.”
During surgery, Susan says she died and found herself outside her body, traveling through a spiritual realm she could not understand. Then she encountered Jesus—and heard words that would shape the rest of her life.
In this powerful conversation, Susan recounts what she experienced, how she came to recognize Jesus as Savior, and why she believes she was sent back as a messenger. Now known affectionately as Gospel Granny, Susan has spent more than five decades studying Scripture and sharing the saving grace of Jesus with others.
