Does Being Discharged From the Hospital Mean You’re Ready to Go Home?
Being medically cleared to leave the hospital and actually being ready to go home are two very different things. A discharge plan can tell you what medications to take, when your follow-up appointment is, and what symptoms should send you back to the hospital. But what about everything else? What happens when the person who walked into the hospital isn’t quite the same person walking back out? What happens when a spouse, parent, child or friend suddenly becomes a caregiver? Who prepares people for the grief, identity changes, survivor’s guilt, fear, uncertainty and complete disruption of everyday life that can follow a life-changing injury or diagnosis? In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, I talk about the gap between being medically stable and actually being prepared for recovery at home. Because the discharge plan isn’t a recovery plan. #HealingBeyondDiagnosis #HospitalDischarge #DischargePlanning #Recovery #BrainInjury #TBIRecovery #StrokeRecovery #CaregiverSupport #InvisibleGrief #IdentityLoss #SurvivorsGuilt #CaregiverStrain #PatientExperience #Healthcare #LifeAfterDiagnosis #EmotionalRecovery

Survivor’s Guilt & Impostor Syndrome: Why Do I Feel Guilty for Moving Forward?
Have you ever felt guilty for surviving, improving, or even being the person others now look to for support? In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, Corey talks about the connection between survivor’s guilt and impostor syndrome — and how both can make us question whether we deserve our recovery, recognition, opportunities, or even the chance to move forward. Survivor’s guilt is not limited to life-or-death situations. It can show up after brain injury, chronic illness, trauma, caregiving, major life changes, or even when life finally begins to improve. Corey also shares a deeply personal story about the guilt he carried after convincing his mother to seek medical attention, and how the unanswered “what ifs” can stay with us long after the moment has passed. HBD_Transcript_TIMESTAMPED_2026-09-21.pdf This episode explores survivor’s guilt, impostor syndrome, caregiver guilt, isolation, identity, recovery, and the struggle to give yourself permission to move forward. One of the biggest messages in this episode: Your story matters. Your healing matters too. Moving forward does not erase what happened in the past. It honours the fact that you are still here. HBD_Transcript_TIMESTAMPED_2026-09-21.pdf If you have ever asked yourself, “Why me?”, “Why did I make it?”, or “Do I really deserve this?” — this conversation is for you. Healing Beyond Diagnosis InitiativeRecovery isn’t going back to who you were. It’s discovering who you’re becoming. You Spoke. I Listened. And It Changed the Work.
This episode is a thank-you. Over the past several days, people living with brain injury have trusted me with their experiences, their frustrations, their recovery stories, and the things they felt were missing. And I listened. Some of that feedback challenged assumptions I didn’t even realize I was making. How an injury happened matters.Where the injury occurred matters. The age and stage of life someone was in matters.Whether someone is two years, seven years, or twenty years into recovery matters.Access to rehabilitation matters. And for some people, the disruption caused by COVID-19 changed the course of their recovery entirely. Those conversations have already changed the way I’m developing the Beyond Diagnosis Recovery Assessment and how I think about follow-up, reassessment, resources, and long-term recovery. That’s what a pilot should do. Your feedback shouldn’t disappear into a questionnaire. Your lived experience should help shape what comes next. So this episode is about what I learned, what is changing, and most importantly, saying thank you to everyone who trusted me enough to share a piece of their story. Your voice mattered. And it still does. Healing was never meant to be faced alone.

Who Is Supposed to Find the Caregiver?
If a caregiver doesn’t know they need support, whose job is it to notice them? Caregivers are already crossing paths with hospitals, doctors, rehab teams, case managers, PSWs, pharmacies and community organizations. So why are we still expecting caregivers to recognize themselves as caregivers, know what support exists, and figure out how to navigate the system alone? In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, I look at the connection gap in caregiver support and ask whether the system needs to become better at identifying and connecting caregivers before they reach a breaking point. We talk about: • “Who helps you at home?” as a routine system question• Hospitals and discharge planning• Primary care and specialists• Home care, PSWs and case managers• Pharmacies and community services• Warm connections versus handing someone a phone number• Who owns the handoff• What happens when nobody does Maybe the challenge isn’t getting caregivers to find the system. Maybe the system has to become better at finding caregivers. Who should be responsible for making that first connection? #CaregiverSupport #Caregiving #Healthcare #HealingBeyondDiagnosis

When Is the Right Time to Reach Someone? | The Caregiver Timing Gap
Caregivers are often given information and support—but is it reaching them when they’re actually ready to receive it? In Episode 2 of the Caregiver Series, Corey Furnival explores the caregiver timing gap: the space between when support is offered and when caregivers recognize that they need it. He discusses invisible grief, emotional overload, the changing caregiver journey, and why meaningful support must meet people where they are. Because caregivers matter too—and healing was never meant to be faced alone. #Caregivers #CaregiverSupport #InvisibleGrief #CaregiverBurnout #HealingBeyondDiagnosis

The Invisible Caregiver
When does being a spouse, parent, child, partner or friend become being a caregiver? For many people, there is no clear moment. A diagnosis happens. An injury changes things. Someone you love needs more help. You start attending appointments, managing medications, providing transportation, advocating, helping with daily needs, watching for changes and carrying more of the emotional load. But if someone asks whether you’re a caregiver, you might still say: “No. That’s my wife.”“That’s my husband.”“That’s my parent.”“That’s my child.” In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, Corey Furnival explores The Invisible Caregiver — the family members and loved ones who take on the responsibilities of caregiving without necessarily recognizing themselves as caregivers. And that raises an important question: If someone doesn’t recognize themselves as a caregiver, how do we make sure caregiver support actually reaches them? This isn’t about putting another label on people. It’s about recognition. Because sometimes the person who needs caregiver support doesn’t know that we’re talking about them. Healing Beyond DiagnosisHealing was never meant to be faced alone.

The Diagnosis Has One Name, But the Whole Family Feels the Effects
A diagnosis may belong to one person, but its impact rarely stops there. When illness, injury, disability, or a life-changing diagnosis enters a family, everyone can feel the shift. Roles change. Responsibilities change. Relationships change. A spouse becomes a caregiver. A child starts worrying about a parent. A parent becomes an advocate. And sometimes, nobody stops to acknowledge what the family is experiencing because all of the attention is understandably focused on the person who received the diagnosis. In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, I talk about that ripple effect — and the people standing beside the diagnosis whose lives may have changed too. This isn’t about taking attention away from the person who is diagnosed. It’s about recognizing that supporting recovery can also mean supporting the family around them. Because the diagnosis may have one name on it — but the whole family can feel the effects. In this episode: How family roles can change after a diagnosis Why many people don’t recognize themselves as caregivers The emotional impact on spouses, parents, children, and other family members Why discharge home doesn’t necessarily mean life goes back to normal The importance of recognizing and supporting caregivers earlier Why family support belongs in the conversation about recovery Healing Beyond Diagnosis explores the parts of recovery that don’t always appear on a medical chart — identity, grief, caregiving, family, adjustment, and what happens when life doesn’t return to the way it was before. WELL THAT AIN’T RIGHT ….. THAT DIDN’T GO ACCORDING TO PLAN | Plan B Is Where the Fun Starts!
We make plans. Good plans. Thought-out plans. Plans we’re absolutely convinced are going to work. And then life looks at them and says, “Yeah… no.” In this episode, I’m talking about what happens when Plan A falls apart — and why that doesn’t necessarily mean you failed. Sometimes the plan was built with the information you had at the time. Sometimes circumstances change. Sometimes recovery changes what you’re capable of doing. And sometimes you discover halfway through that your brilliant idea was… not quite as brilliant as advertised. That’s where Plan B comes in. We talk about adapting instead of giving up, learning from what didn’t work, dealing with setbacks, and why humour can be one of the best tools we have when life gets ridiculous. Because recovery isn’t about everything going according to plan. Sometimes it’s about being able to say: “Well… that didn’t work. What else have we got?” And maybe laughing a little while you figure it out. What’s one Plan B in your life that actually turned out better than Plan A? #HealingBeyondDiagnosis #RecoveryJourney #PlanB #Resilience #Adaptability #RecoveryIsNotLinear #LifeAfterDiagnosis #BrainInjuryRecovery #InvisibleDisability #PersonalGrowth #HealingThroughHumor #FailureIsFeedback #LifeLessons #Podcast #RecoveryPodcast

If you ain’t cookin’, then who are you?
What happens when being the strong one becomes part of who you are—and then life changes the rules? In the final chapter of the Rock Trilogy, we move beyond carrying the weight and breaking the cycle to something much deeper: identity. Sometimes we choose to put the rock down. Sometimes life takes it out of our hands through injury, illness, loss, disability, or circumstances we never asked for. And when that happens, the question isn’t simply “What do I do now?” It becomes: Who am I now? We talk about the invisible grief that can come with losing an old identity, how those changes affect families and relationships, and why rebuilding doesn’t mean trying to become the person you used to be. Maybe strength isn’t about carrying everything anymore. Maybe it’s learning how to carry differently. Carry the weight. Break the cycle. Rebuild the identity.

Breaking the Cycle: When the Rock Can’t Carry Everyone
Being the rock of the family can feel like a strength—until being strong stops being something you do and starts becoming who everyone expects you to be. In this episode of the Healing Beyond Diagnosis Podcast, I talk about what happens when one person becomes the foundation for everyone else. The person who handles the problems, carries the emotions, knows what needs to be done, and keeps saying “I’m fine” even when the weight is getting heavier. Because eventually, something has to give. We look at why asking for help can be so difficult when you’ve built your identity around being dependable, what happens when a family becomes too dependent on one person, and why sharing responsibility isn’t weakness. And there’s a bigger question: What are we teaching the next generation when strength means carrying everything alone? Breaking the cycle doesn’t mean you stop being dependable. It means recognizing that even the strongest foundation needs support. 🎙️ Breaking the Cycle: When the Rock Can’t Carry Everyone Healing Beyond Diagnosis InitiativeYou Are More Than Your Diagnosis.Support • Healing • Hope

Healing Beyond Diagnosis- Ep6. The Caregiver Crisis: Who Is Caring for the Caregivers?
What happens when the person holding everything together starts falling apart? Today we’re talking about the caregiver crisis—and why some exhausted caregivers are turning to emergency rooms just to get a break. Over 4 million Ontarians provide unpaid care to a family member, partner, friend, or neighbour. They are the invisible backbone of our healthcare system—yet many are reaching a breaking point. In this episode of Healing Beyond Diagnosis, we explore the growing caregiver crisis across Ontario and Canada. We discuss caregiver burnout, emotional exhaustion, financial strain, and the reality that many caregivers are sacrificing their own health while supporting someone they love. Recent Ontario data shows that 68% of caregivers say they have reached their breaking point. Some have had to reduce or stop caregiving because of the stress, while others report they desperately need a break but have no one to step in. We also examine a troubling reality: exhausted caregivers are increasingly turning to emergency departments as a form of respite because they have nowhere else to go. One Ontario report estimated nearly 1.9 million emergency department visits were connected to caregivers seeking relief from overwhelming circumstances. This conversation isn’t just about caregivers. It’s about families. It’s about healthcare. It’s about the hidden cost of ignoring those who provide care every day. Because if caregivers break down, the entire system feels the impact. Key Statistics Featured Over 4 million caregivers in Ontario. 68% report reaching their breaking point. 63% report physical and mental exhaustion. Nearly 1.9 million emergency department visits linked to caregivers seeking respite. Caregivers provide billions of dollars in unpaid support that helps keep the healthcare system functioning.
