Healing Out Loud: A Guided Self-Discovery Podcast
Iâve learned something unexpected about healingâŚsometimes, the message doesnât land until you hear it. For years, Iâve poured my heart into writing. Stories. Essays. Reflections.Words that have carried me (and hopefully, you) through seasons of healing, uncertainty, and growth. But lately, Iâve been hearing something from the people I work with:âSusan, I needed to hear your voice.â It caught me off guard at first. Iâve always loved the rhythm of writing â the quiet of it, the control of shaping a sentence until it feels right. But voice⌠voice is different. Voice carries energy.Itâs the tremble, the pause, the exhale.Itâs what reminds us that healing isnât something we just read about â itâs something we feel. So I decided to bring my work into a new medium.đď¸ Introducing Healing Out Loud: A Guided Self-Discovery Podcast. Each episode is an invitation to slow down and listen inward â to your breath, your intuition, and the parts of you that have been waiting to be heard. Iâll share reflections, stories, and the same kind of truths youâve found here â but in a way that lets you feel the words instead of just reading them. The first episode is live now.Itâs short, honest, and imperfect â but thatâs exactly the point. Because healing out loud isnât about being polished.Itâs about being present. Returning to the Life Force
Lately, Iâve been busy simply âbeingâ, enjoying a quieter version of myself. Less action. More ease. More listening. And while I havenât been as visibleâfewer emails, fewer Substack & LinkedIn posts, fewer big projectsâsomething real has been happening during this time. Reading True and False Magic by Phil Stutz gave me language for what Iâve been feeling. He writes about the Life Forceâa foundational current within us that moves us toward vitality, connection, and purpose. And how, when we feel emotionally or mentally stuck, the Life Force is always the place to return to. Itâs not a strategy. Itâs not a mindset shift. Itâs not a 5-step plan. Itâs more primal than that. Itâs the act of re-engaging with life itself. He defines the Life Force in three layers: * Your relationship with your body * Your relationship with people * Your relationship with yourself (your higher self) When I looked at my recent weeks through that lens, I realized something: I have been nurturing my Life Force. Just in quieter ways. * Cooking, walking, gardening, and body care. * Letting go of the need to impress or saveâcleaning up old relationship patterns. * Reading, reflecting, and choosing not to rushâreconnecting to my higher self. And even though it feels weird, Iâm starting to settle into this ânew normalâ. I am starting to want to write again and although I may not have full clarity on whatâs next for me, I trust the process. I havenât disappeared. Iâve been restoring the current. If youâve been feeling off, stuck, or unmotivated, maybe donât start with a new goal. Start with your Life Force. Breathe. Move. Reach out. Reflect. Rest. Let your return begin with living again. Iâll be writing more about this in the weeks ahead, especially how it connects to creating from a grounded place. All love, Sue This is a public episode. When You No Longer Own Your Mind
I sometimes enter a mental (overthinking) space where I no longer own my mind. I feel a quick twitch of anxiety. Suddenly, I know Iâm not in charge of my mind like I was before. I hate not being in control. I quickly work to tell myself itâs all going to be ok - itâs a moment. A reaction to recent events. Ride itâŚyou know how. My thoughts spiral. My chest tightens. The stories start looping. Iâve come to call it âstinkinâ thinkinâââa term I first learned from the FlyLady. (If you know, you know.) I subscribed to her years ago when the part of me that loved order and checklists was looking for anything to keep up with the chaos of motherhood, work, and life. She had systems for everythingâhow to have a clean and organized home while working and raising children at the same time. Everything was systematized and in a step-by-step order. I was instantly drawn to it. I like things spelled out clearly. But I didnât realize that one term she used would hit me so much harder today than it did back then. Because when my brain starts spiraling into stinkinâ thinkinâ now, it doesnât just feel like clutterâit feels like Iâve lost access to my calm, clarity, and center. Everything I have worked so hard over the past several years to cultivate. And thatâs when I know: Itâs time to dial up the self-love.Itâs time for more self-compassion.Itâs time to slow down. My Emergency Self-Love List Itâs not long. Itâs not fancy. But it works every time. * Read a few pages of a book * Bake homemade brownies * Indulge in spiritual TikTokâthose voices that bring me back to my truth This is the actual work I do in these moments. Not more tasks. Not more pressure. Not more striving. Just a little space⌠to feel what Iâm feeling and remember Iâm not brokenâIâm just full. These days, I can feel the moment I shift. Not because Iâve âhealed everythingâ or because life has gotten easier. Because Iâve been here before, Iâve done this a million times and long accepted that this cycle will not stop for me. I donât like to say ânever,â but itâs been my entire life, and if I havenât cracked this nut yet, it simply means it is how I am wired, no matter how hard I try to change it. So, the difference? Leaning inâŚnot fighting it. Sitting in the feelings. Feeling like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. But this time, I can find the exact second I go from being stuck inside the storm of thoughtsâŚto becoming the observer. The woman who knows how to diagnose this latest emotional flare-up and respond with a different kind of to-do listâone that leads with self-compassion. Right now, my plateâs pretty darn full. Thereâs a lot going on. But whatâs different now is that I have tools, frameworks, mental models, and checkpoints. Things Iâve spent the last decade learningâand more importantlyâlearning when to use. Iâm also inspired to share this work with others who it could help. I want to take you deeper into those tools. In my program, we examine the patterns that affect my clients' lives. You can start by doing a self-audit, which you can access here (https://forms.gle/CyVJLWSZQ9h8oHNV9). Because maybe youâve been there tooâfeeling like your brain is running the show and youâre just along for the ride. Maybe youâre tired of thinking your way out of everything only to end up in the same spiral of self-doubt, guilt, or exhaustion. When you lose control of your mind, you can't lead. Period. As a business owner, this means missed opportunities and wasted energy that should go to your business and team. â making the LOSS even clearer In my next post, Iâll walk you through the tools I use when stinkinâ thinkinâ takes overâand how I find my way back to clarity - FAST. Because this is the work. And you donât have to do it alone. All love, Sue This is a public episode. Raw Grief - A Quiet Companion
As I was getting ready to start my workday today, I looked myself in the eyes in the bathroom mirror. And what immediately came to me was: Youâre not talking about whatâs really going on right now. So, Iâll start here. While Iâm excitedly growing a business and working with some incredible people, Iâm also deeply weighed down by what I can only imagine is grief. My momâs heavenly birthday was this month. My dadâs is next month. And in the middle of it all, my sister and I are selling their house. The house we grew up in. The house with layers of memoriesâsome sweet, some complicated, some still sitting in silence. Itâs a lot. I move through my day with a kind of numbness, but not in a bad way. Iâm not disconnectedâI donât feel everything as sharply as I used to. Or if I do, I examine it, inspect it, try to understand where itâs coming from, and then I return to the moment. Sometimes that takes a few minutes. Sometimes, it takes hoursâespecially when I get caught in a memory loop or some story my mind is spinning about the future. This is when I remind myself: Two things can co-exist. I can be wildly excited about this new chapter. I can feel more spiritually aligned than ever before. Andâ I can be grieving.I can be revisiting old pain. I can question whether this version of lifeâthe quieter, more isolated one my husband and I have builtâis what I truly want. Some days, it feels peaceful.Other days, it feels like a long, lonely exhale. Weâve been married 35 years. We donât really fight. Weâre different in almost every wayâand yet, weâre mostly aligned. Sometimes, I wonder if Iâve outgrown him. And then I see how he grows in his quiet way. I used to think we had to grow in the same direction at the same pace. But now I knowâhe grounds while I expand. He lives in the moment, while I dive into the depths of mine. And thatâs okay. Thatâs us. Anyway, back to what I was saying. Iâm calling this grief because I donât know what else to call this numb feeling. My relationship with my mom was complicated. And I havenât grieved in the way I expected myself to. Maybe thatâs the hardest partâexpecting yourself to grieve âright.â Thereâs no map for complicated grief. There is no clean process for mourning what never felt fully resolved. But Iâm letting myself feel itâwhatever "it" is. Iâm letting the memories rise and the numbness sit beside me. And Iâm reminding myself that I donât have to choose between sadness and joy. They can both live here. So today, Iâm naming it. Letting it be real. Letting it breathe. Because pretending Iâm only one thingâjust happy, strong, excitedâdoesnât tell the truth. This season is layered. This growth is sacred. And this grief? Itâs part of letting go that makes room for something new. This is a public episode. When Success Feels Like a Trap
Iâve worked with someone who was affected by high-functioning anxiety and procrastinates their decision-making. Their relentless âonâ mentality does not lead others by providing a healthy example of balance, and their self-care is practically non-existent. For years, I worked in corporate America and saw firsthand how executives wore the mask of âIâve got it all togetherâ while privately battling stress, people-pleasing, and self-doubt. Today, I work with founders who, on paper, are âkilling it.â But behind the scenes, they are emotionally drained. Yet, they seem addicted to the hamster wheel they live life on. Second-guess every decision, delaying taking meaningful action. Having success but only seeing what they âarenâtâ doing or producing. They carry the weight of their entire business 24/7 and never give themselves time to rest. They feel exhausted, and the only break comes from complete collapse when the body and mind finally force it upon them. Iâve developed a self-audit to help them quantify the hidden cost of staying in this unsustainable loop. High-functioning anxiety and doubt unknowingly have them making decisions that drain them mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. Their overcommitment to "doing it all" slows their success and clouds whatâs working. The cost of not addressing this is far greater than they realize. They are in a race to reach a milestone, but ironically, their behavior is slowing them down in seeing results. My self-audit tracks: * Which tasks make me feel energized or fulfilled? * Which tasks make me feel stressed and drained? * Where am I overexplaining, overcommitting, or overcompensating? * How often am I making decisions from anxiety and speed rather than clarity? Most founders donât realize: Anxiety-driven decisions feel like urgency but often lead to total exhaustion. The need to be in control keeps them stuck. Their mental load is silently draining their capacity to lead others. Client Example: âI Canât Slow Downâ đ¤ Meet Sarah, a founder of a coaching business that looks like a huge success from the outside. Sheâs doing wellâclients, revenue, and a steady work stream. But inside? Sheâs barely holding on. * She feels guilty about taking time off because she firmly believes business will slow down. * She over-delivers in every client project out of fear they wonât stay. * She avoids hiring help because she doesnât trust anyone to handle things like she does. * She works late at night and on weekends because she canât turn her brain off. Sarahâs business looks successful, but she feels trapped inside it. When we audited her decision-making process, we uncovered this: * She was saying YES to things that drained her to avoid conflict. * She was making fear-based choices, which slowed her long-term vision. * She was so used to functioning under stress that she mistook it for motivation. What Iâm Learning From This Experiment High achievers often mistake stress for productivity. Anxiety-driven decisions create short-term relief but long-term exhaustion. The cost of not addressing this isnât just emotionalâitâs financial. When I ran this self-audit with clients, they saw exactly where anxiety was costing them money, energy, and peace of mind. Now, Iâm refining this into a repeatable process for foundersâso they can: Make decisions from clarity, not pressure Build a business that feels good, not like a dreaded chore. Stop running in circles and slow down to speed up. If youâve built a business that looks successful but feels heavy, itâs time to change the way you operate. If youâre: * Wondering why you always feel on edge in your business. * Feeling like you canât step back without losing momentum. * Ready to see where youâre making anxiety-driven decisions (without realizing it). Comment or message me âSELF-AUDIT,â and Iâll share the framework. Follow me on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanshier) This is a public episode. How to regulate yourself during the storm
You donât need less stress. You need more stability inside yourself.Hereâs the truth most people donât say out loud: No one escapes the storm. Not the smart. Not the spiritual. Not even the strong. And when you donât know how to regulate? Every little thing wrecks you. Before I learned how to regulate my emotions, I was constantly one bad moment away from spiraling. One frustrating conversation? Ruined my whole day. One uncomfortable interaction? It made me rethink my entire approach and personality. One unexpected change? It left me panicked, scrambling for control. I didnât know how to stay steady. Storms are built into the process. They come without warning.Theyâre loud, messy, disorienting. They shake your confidence, cloud your judgment, and make you question everything. And our first instinct?Fix it. Make it go away. Patch it. Power through it.Weâve been taught that if somethingâs broken, fix it fast. But some storms werenât meant to be fixed. âThe art of the storm isnât fixing.Itâs surviving.ââ adapted from Bishop T.D. Jakes You cannot fix the storm. But you can learn how to stay steady inside it.And more than thatâyou can learn how to let it shape you, instead of break you. Regulation isnât about not feeling things. Itâs about knowing how to hold yourself through them. Itâs learning how to catch anxiety before it spins into a full-blown spiral. Itâs feeling anger or hurt without stuffing it down or lashing out. Itâs knowing how to shift out of stress without completely shutting down. Thatâs the work we do in Month 2 - Regulate the Inside, Stabilize the Outside Mental models that actually work. Your energy stops being stolen by every little setback. Your days will no longer be dictated by other peopleâs moods, last-minute changes, or stressors you canât control. You start feeling calm, clear, and capableâeven when life is messy. This is where things really start to change. Most business owners live in a constant low-level state of stressâsometimes high-level.We work to understand what's actually happening in your body, how to recognize survival-mode patterns, and how to come back to calmâon command. Because regulated founders make better decisions. And that calm? It becomes your superpower. We look at what really drives your anxiety when things feel like theyâre falling apart. What youâre afraid of.What youâre still trying to prove. And how to stop letting shame or fear run the show.Youâll uncover where youâre leaking energy:People-pleasing, overworking, giving too much access, or under-delivering to yourself. Then, we create strong, clear boundariesânot just so others respect you, but so you start showing up for yourself in a new way.You donât need more hacks or color-coded to-do lists. You need to understand your personal rhythmâyour real capacityâand how to build a business that supports it. This isnât about doing less for the sake of it.Itâs about learning how to protect the energy required to do what matters.Youâve made it through storms before. But this time, we help you walk through it with more self-trust, more peace, and less damage to your health, relationships, or business. This is the work most people skip. They build a strategy on top of dysregulation. They hire help before doing the internal cleanup. They wonder why nothing ever feels âsafeâ or âenoughââeven when itâs working. But you wonât be that founder. Youâll know how to sit in the storm without falling apart.Youâll know how to hold steady when things get noisy. And youâll build from the inside outâso it actually lasts. Youâre not broken. Youâre BECOMING.And you donât have to go it alone. Who is with you in the storm? Letâs go there together. Sue This is a public episode. I Stopped Running From My FeelingsâAnd Everything Changed
For most of my life, I believed I had to be strong. â I had to keep pushing through â I had to stay productive â I had to prove my worth If I could work harder, if I could just be more chill, if I could just figure it all out, then maybeâjust maybeâIâd finally feel better. But no matter what I did, I always ended up in the same placeâstuck, drained, replaying old hurts on a loop in my head. And then, one day, I broke. Not in a graceful, controlled way. Not in a this is my healing era way. I hit a wall. I was depleted of all energyI was frazzled.I was ready to try something new and scary. And so, for the first time, I did something I had spent 15 years avoiding. It was the homework from my coach. Tomorrow, I want you to sit in your feelings for 10 minutes she said. I remember being shocked and saying, â10 MINUTES?!â. She said yesâŚand no tv, no magazine, no book. Nothing. Just you sitting there and feeling what comes up. So I always did what Maia suggested because this woman knew her stuff and she cared about me. I knew she had my best interests at heart so I did what she asked me to do. I let myself fall apart. I ugly cried on the couch in my living room. Sitting there leaning up against the arm, looking outside at the beautiful pond in my backyard. I allowed every repressed emotion hit me like a wave. It sucked. Why am I doing this? God this is a lot to deal with. Iâm gonna need therapy today for sure. I didnât journal my feelings into a notebook.I didnât meditate them away. I didnât even know about these things back then. I sat there, eating a bag of cheese doodles and drinking an orange soda, and finally, I let myself feel. Even though Maia said nothing w/you I was sure she didnât mean no to my favorite snack and drink. And for the first time, I realized: I had spent decades running from sitting with myself. Running from my anxietyRunning from my exhaustion.Running from the broken version of me.. But hereâs the thing about emotions: They donât disappear just because you ignore them. They sit there, buried under your productivity, busyness, and ability to hold it all together. They live in your chest, stomach, and bodyâuntil one day, you feel like you might internally combust if someone looks at you the wrong way. That day, I finally stopped treating my emotions like problems to fix. Instead, I let them speak. ⨠The tightness in my chest? My body begging me to slow down.⨠The exhaustion? Not just from lifeâbut from holding up the mask.⨠The anxiety? Not an enemyâbut a sign I had been ignoring myself for too long. And when I finally stopped fighting myself? Everything shifted. â I learned how to catch myself people-pleasing before it drained me.â I stopped ignoring what my body was trying to tell me.â I realized I wasnât brokenâI was burnt out from proving myself. Hereâs what I know now: ⨠You donât have to keep running.⨠You donât have to earn your way to peace.⨠You donât have to fix yourself to be worthy of feeling good. Feeling good isnât something you achieve. Itâs something you allow. And thatâs exactly what I help others do. With or without cheese doodles and orange soda (your choice). If this resonates, stay tuned. Iâll share more soon for those ready to stop waiting and start feeling better. đŹ Have you ever felt like you were running from yourself? Tell me in the comments. The day my mask crackedâand why I had to rebuild from the inside out
For most of my life, I was the strong one. The reliable one. The one who could handle anythingâor at least, thatâs what I let people believe. I thought that if I just kept it together, stayed productive, and pushed through, Iâd be okay. And for a while? The mask worked. â I knew how to smile, even when I was struggling. â I knew how to be âfineâ, even when I felt like I was drowning. â I knew how to keep showing up, even when I had nothing left to give. But then? The cracks started to show. đ¸ Someone would ask how I was doing, and Iâd hesitateâbecause the truth felt too messy to say out loud. đ¸ A single offhand comment or a less-than-ideal interaction would send me spiralingânot because of what was said, but because of everything I had been carrying for years. đ¸ Iâd catch myself replaying the same old hurts and disappointments, like a loop in my mind I couldnât turn off no matter how much I wanted to. And then one day, it happened. The mask wasnât protecting me anymore. It was obviousânot just to me, but to everyone who looked at me. I could swear they could see âBROKENâ written on my forehead. So I did the only thing I knew how to do. I hid. I stayed home. I secluded myself. I withdrew from everything. I lost friendships as people didnât understand my âhotâ and âcoldâ behavior. Because the thing about wearing a mask for so long? When it finally slips, you donât know who you are without it. And that? That was the worst part. The Truth About Why We Wear the Mask This isnât just my storyâitâs the experience of so many people living with high-functioning anxiety, depression, and hidden mental resilience struggles. We donât wear the mask because we want to. We wear it because we were taught thatâs what âstrongâ people do. â We learned early on that emotions make people uncomfortableâso we packaged them neatly or pushed them away. â We believed that if we were struggling, we just werenât working hard enough. â We got praised for being the responsible one, the reliable one, the strong one. And at some point, we believed thatâs all we were allowed to be. But hereâs the truth no one tells you: The mask doesnât actually make you stronger. It just makes you exhausted. What Happens When You Take the Mask Off? Taking off the mask doesnât mean falling apart. It means finally learning how to live as yourselfâwithout fear, without apology, without the constant exhaustion of pretending. â It means feeling safe in your own mindânot like youâre battling yourself every day. â It means trusting yourself again instead of gaslighting yourself into pushing harder. â It means building resilienceâso you can navigate stress without slipping into survival mode. â It means letting go of guiltâfor needing rest, boundaries, or support. But most of all? It means knowing you donât have to prove your worth through struggle. I didnât realize it at the time, but this momentâthis breaking pointâwas when I found my âwhy.â The version of me underneath the mask? She had been waiting for me all along. In my next post, Iâll share what happens when we start loosening the maskâs gripâand the first step to finding yourself beneath it. All love, Sue This is a public episode. Why i never won the self-help battle & the war i fought against myself
Until I realized I was fighting the wrong battle. For years, I thought the only way to feel better was to fix my broken self. I spent my whole life trying to turn myself into something elseâ Trying to be less anxious, less emotional, less "too much." Trying to overcome my self-doubt, my overthinking, my sensitivity. Trying to eliminate the parts of me that felt messy, broken, or inconvenient. I saw them as weaknesses. Flaws that needed to be erased. So I tried - NON-STOP I read the books.I pushed myself harderI set goals to be better, stronger, more disciplined. But no matter what I did, those parts of me never really left. They just got louder. * The more I tried to suppress my emotions, the more overwhelmed I felt. * The more I tried to "reframe" my anxiety, the more it controlled me. * The more I tried to push through exhaustion, the more disconnected I became from myself. I was at war with myself. Until I realized something that changed everything: The traits I was trying to eliminate werenât weaknesses. They were strengths that had been misused. The self-help industry, now worth over $14 billion, keeps us stuck in loops of endless optimization. We read and integrate the same generic advice without considering whether it truly aligns with our unique patterns, needs, and circumstances. Some of the BS reframes I thought served me, when it just reinforced the behaviours I was trying so hard to âfixâ: đ Perfectionism is attention to detailâbut when misused, it paralyzes you. đ Overthinking is deep analysisâbut when unregulated, it spirals into anxiety. đ People-pleasing is emotional intelligenceâbut when unchecked, it leaves you drained. The real work isnât to get rid of these traits. Itâs about learning to channel them into something that serves you instead of controls you. And thatâs what I had to learn the hard way. The parts of me I thought I had to fight were the very things that held my power. In the next few days, Iâll share something Iâve been working onâsomething for those of us who are tired of keeping it all together, tired of self-improvement that only makes us feel worse, and ready for something different. More soon. All love, Sue This is a public episode. Sometimes, what's holding us back isn't what we think.
You donât remember putting the mask on. Itâs just⌠always been there. The capable, composed, high-functioning version of you that shows up every day, handles everything, and keeps goingâno matter what. At some point, it stopped being a mask and became who you are. But then, something happens. â Someone asks how youâre really doing, and you hesitateâbecause the truth feels too messy to say out loud. â You snap at something small, and suddenly, frustration, exhaustion, or resentment bubbles up out of nowhere. â A casual comment slips outâsomething unfiltered, something rawâand for a moment, you feel exposed. Thatâs the moment the mask slips. For a split second, you see something beneath the surfaceâa habit, a belief, a way of coping you werenât fully aware of before. Thatâs when you realize: thereâs a version of you underneath this mask thatâs been waiting to be seen. And hereâs the thing about the mask: itâs incredibly heavy. The longer we wear it, the more exhausted we become. We all wear them. The "Iâve got this under control" mask. The "Iâm fine" mask. It is the one that keeps us moving, even when something deep inside calls for us to stop, pay attention, and look closer. But what if you didnât have to hold it up anymore? What if you didnât have to push through, pretend, or exhaust yourself just to feel okay? The truth is, thereâs nothing wrong with you. Thereâs just a story thatâs been running on repeat. A story youâve been stuck in for so long that youâve started believing itâs the only way. But itâs not. In a few days, Iâll share something Iâve been working onâsomething for those who are tired of holding it all together but donât know how to stop. Something that helps you step out from behind the maskâwithout losing yourself in the process. More soon. All love, Sue. This is a public episode. Endorphin Infused Life Advice
My mental health has always been a challenge for me, but it really took a hit when I had major surgery in the Fall, lost my mom in March, and then lost my job in April of this year. To say I was beyond overwhelmed with everything going on is an understatement. So much loss. So much grief. It would be a huge uphill battle I wasnât sure I had the strength to endure. An exercise routine is one of the most positive things I have done for myself. Years ago, I used to do weight training with my dad. He was a personal trainer, and I also worked out with my husband for many years. I was pretty solid and fit. Over the years, I allowed taking care of my family and a demanding job to take 95% of my time and energy.Over the years, doubt has crept into my mind about what I am and what Iâm not able to do with my body. I had lost touch with what I was once able to do, and I gave up. All of a sudden, something remarkable happened. I realized that the majority of the battle was IN MY MIND! I pushed through the mental barriers, and suddenly, I am achieving things I once deemed impossible. The body was capable all along; it just needed the mind to believe. In many ways, life's challenges are like this, too. When things get tough, it's easy to question your own abilities and contemplate giving up. But remember, just like me, you possess immense strength within you. Often, the biggest obstacle is not the external challenge but the internal doubt that can hold you back. So, when you find yourself at a crossroads and the temptation to give up creeps in, I encourage you to reflect on these thoughts. Realize that your potential is greater than you may believe at this moment. Embrace the difficulties, push through the doubts, and trust in your own strength. You have the power to overcome, to rise above, and to achieve things that might seem insurmountable right now.I believe in you and know that you can conquer whatever challenges come your way. Keep pushing forward, and remember that your strength is not just physical â it's mental, emotional, and boundless. You've got this.I am sending you all the positivity and strength in the world. Peace. This is a public episode.
