We grow up surrounded by heroes. The cricketer who hits the winning six. The actor who saves the day on screen. The guru whose words feel like they were written just for us. Even our own parents, who at some point in our childhood, seemed larger than life, capable of fixing anything. Somewhere in the middle of all that admiration, without even noticing it, most of us quietly handed away the one role we were always meant to play ourselves — the hero of our own story.
This episode of Purity & Purpose is a gentle but honest conversation about that forgetting. Not the loud, cinematic kind of heroism with capes, dragons, and dramatic music playing in the background — but the quiet, unglamorous kind that shows up in ordinary moments. The kind nobody claps for. Choosing patience when anger would be easier. Choosing honesty when a small lie would smooth things over. Choosing discipline when comfort is right there, waiting. These are the real battles most of us fight every single day, and they rarely get any recognition — not even from ourselves.
We spend this episode unpacking the difference between two very different ways of living. The first is what we call "victim mode" — a mindset where life is something that happens to you. Circumstances control the mood, other people control the outcome, and the day simply unfolds while you react to it. The second is "hero mode" — where you stop outsourcing your power. You don't get to choose everything that happens, but you always get to choose your response, and that response is where your actual strength lives.
At the heart of this conversation is something we call the Hidden Conversation — a thread that runs through the "Rise Above" framework and through much of what we discuss on this podcast. It's a simple but uncomfortable question: in any given moment, are you giving, or are you seeking? Are you seeking validation, rescue, reassurance, applause — waiting for someone else to notice your effort, calm your fear, or tell you that you're doing okay? Or are you giving — offering steadiness, patience, warmth, even to yourself, without needing anyone to hand it to you first? A hero, in the way we mean it here, isn't someone without fear or without need. It's someone who has learned to give more than they seek, especially to themselves, especially in the moments no one else is watching.
We talk about how this forgetting doesn't happen all at once. It happens slowly, through years of conditioning — through comparison, through the way society quietly teaches us to measure ourselves against others, through the subtle message that our worth depends on being chosen, praised, or validated by someone outside ourselves. Bit by bit, we start waiting. Waiting to be picked. Waiting to be told we're enough. Waiting for someone to walk in and rescue us from whatever we're going through. And somewhere in all that waiting, we forget that we were never actually cast as the side character. We were always the one the story was about.
This episode also makes space for a personal reflection — a real, relatable moment of catching yourself mid-wait, and instead of continuing to wait, simply moving. Taking one small step. Not because the fear disappeared, but because you remembered, even for a second, that you didn't need permission to act. That single shift — from waiting to moving — is often the entire difference between staying stuck and beginning to rise.
Listen, reflect, and if it resonates, share it with someone who might need the reminder today.
