Talking gender norms outtake from Ess Hödlmoser

Bonus Content

A while ago I had the opportunity to interview Ess Hödlmoser on 52 Weeks of Health Equity and I don't do a lot of video content but this was one of the outtakes. Feels fitting to publish an outtake about gender norms in March.

Ess is a nonbinary trans circus artist from Toronto, Canada who specializes in aerial straps and contortion. You may know them from their work in television and film, maybe The Expanse, or The Boys, or Motherland.

I found Ess through their aerial work. Most recently a performance called Atelier Barbette, and they were kind enough to spend an afternoon chatting.

We discussed breaking artistic barriers, health equity, and what it’s like being a self-employed artist with intersecting historically marginalized identities. We talked about circus work and healthcare.

What it's like being marginalized including being trans, autistic, and nonbinary, and getting healthcare. There was so much great content that I wanted to share because we talked about so many things.

This outtake is some of what did not make it in, which included a piece on male bodies, body dysmorphia, and how gender norms hurt us all.
