Episode 7 (Part 1 of 2 series)
AGING IN PLACE is a concept that resonates with so many older adults. While there are alternatives, most people will say “I Want to Stay in My Own Home” and here’s how. AT HOME IN GREENWICH (https://www.athomeingreenwich.org/) is one of several hundred member organizations nationally that brings vetted services to the member. No, not just for the elderly and infirmed, but also for those active and wanting to stay put and have others do for them what they once did for themselves, or never wanted to do. An outgrowth of the BEACON HILL PROJECT (https://www.beaconhillvillage.org/) in Boston. “The mission of Beacon Hill Village is to provide information and services, sponsor recreational and educational activities and foster a strong sense of community so that older adults in central Boston neighborhoods can live their lives to the fullest independently in their own homes.” Greenwich, CT was an early adopter of this “village to village (https://www.vtvnetwork.org/)” concept. Executive Director, Lise Jameson has years of experience in social services and shares that in this interview series.

What is Your Quality of Life with TechnoStress? (Part 2 of 4 series)
PODCAST SHOW NOTES
Episode 6 (Part 2 of 4 series)
TECHNO STRESS - Fight or flight is in all of us and serves a very useful purpose when it kicks in at the right time. What happens when it kicks in and doesn’t stop? Techno Stress is a term that best describes the way we seem to living our lives today. Rather than being the masters of our machines and devices, too often we become their slaves. There are techniques to help manage this dilemma, like better time management. But what happens when you are not the one in control? With insatiable appetite for instant information and response, we often put undue pressure on ourselves and others to the point that it will and does affect our health.
Maud Purcell deals with these issues daily in her practice as a psychotherapist and Maud Purcell MSW, LCSW, CEAP is the Executive Director of The Life Solution Center of Darien, CT. Her approach is short-term and solution-focused. She recognizes that most dilemmas have straightforward, common-sense solutions. Maud weaves a unique blend of warmth and humor into her work. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity College (Hartford, CT). She completed her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina (Summa cum Laude).

Orphan Boomers ● HAVING THAT HARD TALK WITH YOUR FOLKS
PODCAST SHOW NOTES
Vol 1 Episode 4
Some of my favorite shows are ones we call “open mic” where we, in the studio have a free-wheeling discussion about certain topics. We recorded these two a while back and I think that they’re as relevant now as then, maybe more so.
Orphan Boomers....Many people fall into the category of being Orphan Adults or Elder Orphans and may not be aware of the terms, the limitations, and pitfalls that those words represent even though they apply to them. The terms refer to people aging alone and unsupported, with no known family member or designated surrogate to act on their behalf. They may find that there's a conflict between what they want done and what the law permits. In 2016 University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study (HRS) indicated that 22% of people over age 65 currently are, or at risk to become, elder orphans. As the numbers of Baby Boomers age, this number will probably grow significantly.
HAVING THAT HARD TALK WITH YOUR FOLKS …... There are a lot of people who are children of elderly parents. This may become a reversal of roles. Instead of parents caring for their children their children now care for their folks. This can create a lot of family dynamics……… unresolved issues, like why did my brother do that to me or why did I ever do that to my brother?....... reality checks, like we should have started this conversation with Mom and Dad a long time ago or Who was it that said everything's taken care of… we’ve got plenty of money?
Getting ready for what may come is a whole lot better than.…...what do we do now? It's entirely natural to think of your parents as strong and protective of you rather than frail, elderly and in need of care and protection themselves.
Needless to say, when these things happen there's a lot of stress, emotionally and physically that will require everyone acting and working like the adults that they are and very possibly viewing things through a whole different set of lenses. Hopefully this will be food for thought and permit resolution or resolution of would-be problems before they happen.
Orphan Boomers- What?? Sure Boomers without family connections. Folks without immediate family support may have an extended family network of non-relatives. That’s great until something happens. Believe it or not, not everyone plans well for their future.
Refusal? Denial?.... Ever try talking with your parents about issues of their age, their forgetfulness or best yet giving up driving? If so, you probably have seen both refusal and denial first hand. If not, you need to listen to our “open mike session”

Causes of Gray Hair ● Best time of day for Meds
PODCAST SHOW NOTES
Vol 1 Episode 3
Episode 3
Cause gray hair - Going gray is caused by a massive buildup of hydrogen peroxide due to wear and tear of our hair follicles. The peroxide winds up blocking the normal synthesis of melanin, our hair's natural pigment. That may be the cause, then is it reversible? 00:22
Senile hair graying: H2O2-mediated oxidative stress affects human hair color by blunting methionine sulfoxide repair (https://faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1096/fj.08-125435)

Best Time to take meds – Does our bodies internal circadian rhythm dictate when certain medications work best? Many diseases also have daily rhythms (http://cardio.bjmu.edu.cn/reference/1228.pdf). Does this mean there may be times of the day when medications can be more effective? 03:24
