   In this episode, Dr. Toniya Farmer discussed her near-death experience as a SCAD Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest Survivor. She is a devoted wife, mother, granddaughter, and Doctor of Physical Therapy. She is also an advocate for CPR/AED certification. Guest: Dr. Toniya Farmer Last winter, 39-year-old Toniya Farmer, DPT, was in a race for her life — literally, speeding on her way in the car toward the nearest hospital while experiencing the kind of doomsday chest pain that surely signaled a heart attack. On the phone with her was a 911 operator, who advised her at one point to pull over to the side of the road. But, as she recalled later, “I knew if I stopped driving, I would die. Jesus literally took the wheel.”

   We discussed Reese’s experience as a child of a parent whose experienced a near death experience. Reese Johnson is the youngest son of Naesha Parks. Just ten days after Reese was born, his mom became deathly ill. Reese is fourteen years old now, and loves to sing, act, and dance. He’s grateful for the opportunity to come on The Heart Matters Podcast and share.

    Grief is a Part of Recovery

    I have a conversation with Pastor Roscoe Perry about depression, supporting those with PTSD, and how people recover from traumatic experiences. Roscoe Perry earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Business Administration from Savannah State University; graduating in 1985. Pastor Perry holds a Master of Divinity degree from ITC (Interdenominational Theological Center) at Morehouse School of Religion. He formerly served as Vice President of State Congress of Christian Education and serves as President of Mount Up Ministries, Inc. in Appling, GA. He is an instructor at American Baptist College in Augusta, GA; satellite site for American Baptist Theological of Nashville, TN. Faithfully serving as Pastor of First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia. Roscoe Perry also serves as spiritual care coordinator for hospice .

    Beating Death through the eyes of Dr. Vinayak Kamath, Former Chief of Cardiac Surgery University Hospital

    In this episode, we start at the beginning. We talk to Dr. Vinayak Kamath, who shares the story of Naesha dying for 28 minutes, needing a heart transplant, and recovering without receiving one. Dr. Kamath is an Emeritus Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta GA. He was chief of cardiac surgery at University Hospital until 2010 before moving to MCG as chief in 2011 and retiring in 2018.
