In this episode of the Heart Wired Podcast, we delve into the controversial yet crucial topic of self-diagnosis for adults, particularly within the Autistic community. We explore how understanding ourselves better can equip us to guide our children more effectively.
We discuss the common struggle with Imposter Syndrome among self-diagnosed Autistics and challenge the notion that only professionals can validate one's neurodivergence. Through personal anecdotes, we highlight how self-education and a deep understanding of Autism helped in advocating for a late diagnosis for my son, who didn't fit the stereotypical mold.
We also address misconceptions about self-diagnosis, emphasizing its importance for mental health and the challenges in accessing professional diagnoses. For many, self-diagnosis provides the validation and understanding needed to navigate life more comfortably.
Throughout the episode, I share personal experiences, including the journey with my son’s Autism and my own realization of being Autistic. These stories underline the importance of self-awareness and the role of self-diagnosis in fostering personal growth and better parenting.

From Control to Guidance: Rethinking Parental Roles in Technology Use
This podcast explores the topic of technology and parenting, and the importance of finding the right balance for both parents and children. It acknowledges that technology has its advantages and disadvantages, but emphasizes the need for parents to trust and guide their children rather than control their use of technology. It discusses the common fears that parents have around their children accessing inappropriate content or meeting strangers online, and suggests that preventing addiction is a complex process that should involve gradually increasing the complexity of the technology used as the child matures. It highlights the importance of open, honest, respectful relationships between parents and children in teaching responsibility and ensuring safety online, and notes that controlling a child's technology use can backfire by creating mistrust and negative self-beliefs. The podcast also offers practical tips for parents on how to create a transparent, supportive environment around their child's use of technology, including having conversations about trust, tackling fears head-on, and expanding their child's technological interests.
