   Heavenly Homeland: Choosing Barabbas

In the fourth installment of Heavenly Homeland we focus exclusively on the former President Donald Trump and his perceived hold on evangelicals. Drawing from the dramatic biblical account of the choice between Barabbas and Jesus, this discussion delves into the echoes of this ancient decision in today's fervent political landscape, where the lines between spiritual faith and political allegiance are often blurred. Our guests, including Dr. Andrew Whitehead, an associate professor of sociology and an authority on Christian nationalism  and Dr. David Gushee, a distinguished professor of Christian ethics, share their expertise on the allure of political power, the rise of Christian nationalism, and the ethical dilemmas faced by believers in the political arena today. Through their commentary, we explore how evangelical support for figures like Donald Trump—a symbol of immediate, worldly justice—making the connection to Barabbas even more relevant. Other guests like Dr. Steven Hassan, America's leading cult expert; Dr. Renee Carr, a clinical psychologist with deep insights into the psychology of politics and religion; and André Gagné, Ph.D.,Professor of Theological Studies tackle the complex dynamics of idolizing political leaders, the intertwining of faith and nationalism, and the moral and spiritual comparisons to other characters in the Bible. We end the episode with Amanda Carpenter, author of the book "Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies to Us" (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/gaslighting-america-amanda-carpenter/1126314531?ean=9780062748003) who discusses how Trump uses gaslighting to trick and deceive many of his followers. “American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church” w/Dr. Andrew Whitehead (https://www.faithfulpolitics.us/podcast-1/episode/7b29c751/american-idolatry-how-christian-nationalism-betrays-the-gospel-and-threatens-the-church-withandrew-whitehead-phd) "Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies" w/Dr. David P. Heavenly Homeland: The Bible as a Booster Seat

In the third episode of Heavenly Homeland, a five-part audio documentary from Faithful Politics, we explore the profound and often contentious relationship between Christian nationalism and American history. Host Will Wright takes us on a thought-provoking journey through instances where Biblical scripture has been wielded as a tool for both oppression and liberation, reflecting deeply on the ethical and spiritual dilemmas faced by those at the intersection of faith and governance. We start the episode with a particularly harrowing story of George Stinney, the youngest person sentenced to death in the U.S. who was too small to fit in the electric chair and was propped up by the use of a Bible where he was electrocuted. Professor Corinna Lain, a constitutional law scholar, provides insight into Stinney's case, shedding light on broader issues of racial injustice and the death penalty. The episode also features Mark Charles, a Native American activist, who discusses the Doctrine of Discovery's devastating impact on indigenous peoples, framing it within the broader context of America's historical amnesia regarding its founding and the ongoing struggles for racial and social justice. We hear again from Robby Jones, president of PRRI, who revisits the roots of white supremacy in American Christianity, connecting the historical dots between religious splits over slavery and modern racial divisions. This historical perspective is enriched by Professor Anthea Butler's exploration of polygenesis and the misuse of biblical interpretations to support racist ideologies. The episode ends with a brief look at Christian Nationalism influences at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 and we hear from Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn to get his thoughts on what it all means. Heavenly Homeland: Church & State: You Gotta Keep'Em Separated

In the second installment of "Heavenly Homeland" from the Faithful Politics podcast, we continue our discussion of Christian nationalism with a special focus on the separation of church and state in America. This episode  aims to explore how the belief in America as a Christian nation affects politics and laws, especially when it comes to maintaining the boundary between church and state. The discussion highlights historical references, including Thomas Jefferson's 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association, where he articulated the principle of a "wall of separation" between church and state, a concept not explicitly stated in the Constitution but implied in the First Amendment. The episode also brings in perspectives from various experts, including Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Eric Berger and Caroline Mala Corbin,  law professor specializing in U.S. constitutional law. They discuss the importance of the separation as a means to protect religious freedoms and prevent the government from favoring one religion over others or over non-religion. The discussion is further enriched by Amanda Tyler, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC) for Religious Liberty, emphasizing the necessity of both the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to safeguard religious liberty for all. Significant legal cases, such as the Supreme Court ruling in favor of a high school football coach's right to pray on the field, are examined to illustrate the ongoing debates and challenges surrounding religious freedom and the role of religion in public life. Lastly, Andrew Seidel helps us better understand the potential consequences of the Kennedy v. Bremerton ruling and the impact it may have on the Lemon test, a three-part test for determining when a law violates the Establishment Clause.
