Episode 5: Oma's German Cookbook

(Recorded 7/4/24)

The latest iteration of Heirlooms: an episode with my big brother, Truman!

The main feature of this episode is Oma's German cookbook, which serves as a prompt for discussing family traditions and cherished recipes, our present pursuit of dual citizenship, and other quintessential sibling memories.

From there, we dive into recent life changes, embracing imperfection and failure, the power of exercise, and other nuggets of wisdom from our 28 and 30 years, respectively.

We hope you enjoy it!

P.S.

For anyone wondering, the book is called "Praktisches Kochbuch für die bürgerliche Küche" by Marie Boggs

P.P.S. I am still an amateur at podcast production so you'll find that this episode is a patchwork of two different local audios bc I didn't use a platform that inherently allowed for this *honks clown horn*.... As a result, I spent an extra 12 hours cutting individual monologues and patching them together by hand. It was a pain, but altogether worth it!

Episode 4: The Sled

At long last, I'm back with another episode! This time, I sit down in the Northwoods of Wisconsin with my mother, Patty.

Over beers, we discuss her German upbringing, family recipes & traditions, chance run-ins with a fellow German family at a small-town campground, and other dear memories that belong only to her.

This episode's heirloom is a sled given to her by her beloved Uncle Leonard and Aunt Irene, who she tells us about through past memories in the episode. By the end, it is clear this sled was and still is more than a toy; it is a taproot to the endearment she felt toward them, memories shared with siblings, and a signpost for remembering their influence on her as a girl.

Episode 3: The Typewriter

The third installment of the Heirlooms origin story is finally here. Join me and my dad as we revisit his time in corrections, the people he met along the way, and the things that got him through. One such item includes today's heirloom, his beloved typewriter on which he wrote poems, letters to loved ones & the community, and even his own appeal for a sentence reduction!

Needless to say, this was a powerful tool in an otherwise disempowering setting. Listen along as we revisit some of the memories and excerpts of this era.

TW: Violence; profanity; incarceration + confinement

If you'd like to read the accompanying blog posts, they are linked below:

1. Captain Kangaroo
2. Better Boy
3. The Typewriter

If you are interested in being a guest on the Heirlooms podcast, send me a DM on Instagram @heirloomspodcast!
