   Survival may have gotten you here, but survival was never supposed to be your permanent address. At some point, we have to stop simply learning how not to die and begin learning how to live. The life you know taught you how to survive. The life you want is going to teach you how to live.

   Whose Bible Is It Anyway? When Scripture Can Defend Both the Slave and the Abolitionist.

   The episode wouldn't have to argue that the Bible is simply good or bad. The more difficult question is: If the slaveholder and the abolitionist are both holding the Bible, how do we determine which one understands God? And then take it further: slavery, segregation, civil rights, women's equality, interracial marriage, LGBTQ issues, war, the death penalty, wealth and poverty. Across history, people have repeatedly reached into scripture and emerged with contradictory conclusions. That puts your own spiritual journey right in the center of the discussion: maybe questioning scripture, interpretation, and religious authority isn't necessarily abandoning God. Maybe sometimes questioning what people tell us God said is part of searching for God.
