Her Cut is a podcast from Woman Made Films dedicated to celebrating the women who shape the film industry. Through conversations with directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and other creatives, we explore the stories behind the work, the paths that led them to filmmaking, and the challenges and triumphs of building a career in the industry.
Whether you're an aspiring filmmaker, a lifelong movie lover, or simply curious about the people behind the camera, Her Cut offers thoughtful conversations about creativity, representation, and the power of storytelling.
In this episode of Her Cut, I’m joined by sound designer, sound editor, rerecording mixer, and founder of Rimsza Studios Melissa Rimsza to talk about the often overlooked role sound plays in filmmaking.
Melissa shares how one audio class changed the direction of her career, her journey into post-production sound, and the mentorship that helped her learn the industry from the inside. We talk about her experience working across indie films, podcasts, audiobooks, and video games before landing a sound apprenticeship at Sony Pictures.
We also discuss what filmmakers often get wrong about sound, why production sound and dialogue should be a priority, and why filmmakers need to budget for post sound from the beginning.

The Reality of Building a Career in Film with Clark Phillips
In this episode of Her Cut, I’m joined by filmmaker and founder of Cinema Sense, Clark Phillips, to talk about making films on your own terms, building a career outside of traditional industry hubs, and why filmmakers can’t always wait for permission to create.
Clark shares how her journey into filmmaking began and how her work has developed around stories of resilience, obstacles, and characters who are forced to make the best of the circumstances they’ve been given. We talk about her award-winning short film Sugar Brown, a sci-fi story about motherhood, healthcare, genetic modification, and the lengths one woman will go to protect her child. We also discuss how Clark and her team created a believable sci-fi world on a limited budget and why filmmakers shouldn’t let the cost of a genre stop them from making the films they want to make.
We also get into the realities of building a career after film school, from balancing filmmaking with day jobs and navigating grants to learning the business side of the industry and developing an entrepreneurial mindset. Clark shares why she believes filmmakers need to focus on what they can do themselves instead of waiting for an opportunity to come along.

Why You Need to be Watching More Films Made by Women
Welcome to the very first episode of Her Cut, a Woman Made Films podcast.
For the premiere episode, host Aiven Rylee dives into why we need to watch more films made by women and why who is behind the camera matters. After noticing how often the same films and directors dominate film conversations, Aiven explores the lack of representation women face in the industry, the barriers that have shaped this gap, and how audiences play a role in changing the future of cinema.
From the statistics behind women’s representation in directing to the importance of the female perspective in storytelling, this episode makes the case that discovering films made by women doesn’t just expand your watchlist — it changes the way we see movies.
