<p>Op de middelbare school verveelde hij zich dood, tot hij bij het vak economie vlinders in zijn buik kreeg. Eindelijk had hij een kader om zijn nieuwsgierigheid te kanaliseren. Hij studeerde cum laude af aan de prestigieuze Bocconi Universiteit in Milaan, en was klaar om investment banker te worden in Londen. Maar toen hij het aanbod eindelijk in handen had, kwam de vraag: is dit wie ik ben, of wie ik had gehoopt te willen zijn? Het antwoord bracht hem op een heel ander pad.</p><p>Inmiddels is <a target="_blank" href="https://substack.com/profile/25618754-jona-van-loenen">Jona van Loenen</a> ‘huis-econoom’ bij diverse tv-programma’s, schrijft hij elke zaterdag in Trouw en neemt hij op Instagram influencers op de hak. Als ‘undercover econoom’ maakt hij lastige materie behapbaar. En dat hij goed is in uitleggen, ga je horen in deze aflevering.</p><p>Deze week zit Jona bij mij op de bank, om te praten over het werkende leven aan de hand van zijn indrukwekkende — en verrassend kronkelige — carrière. Bij het terugluisteren viel op hoe snel hij denkt. De informatiedichtheid is hoog het eerste half uur. Daarbij heb dingen gehoord die ik zelden hoor. Zo deelt Jona metaforen voor wanneer je een verkeerde afslag neemt in het werkende leven:</p><p>“Als je een afslag te vroeg of te laat neemt, zegt de GPS niet: mislukt, je komt er nooit meer. Die zegt: we berekenen de route opnieuw. Zo kijk ik naar alles wat ik doe.”</p><p>En ontdekte hij dankzij een Italiaanse schoenmaker waar het eigenlijk om gaat:</p><p>“Ik vroeg de schoenmaker waarom hij het werk niet uitbesteedde — hij kon veertig keer zoveel verdienen. Hij zei gewoon: omdat ik dit heel fijn vind om te doen. Ik liep naar huis en dacht: ja, dit is het eigenlijk.”</p><p>Goed, deze wil je echt niet missen. And I wasn’t the only one. His writing went viral (13k+ likes on Substack is insane). It clearly resonates with a big audience. That combination led me to inviting him for my very first English episode of Het Betere Werk.</p><p>In this conversation we try to unpack this shift Alex’ so brilliantly describes.
