9. De negende en de dood
Beethoven is na een lange en vermoeiende strijd aangesteld als enige wettelijke voogd van zijn neef Karl. Dat bezorgt hem veel kopzorgen maar na een tijdje gaat het hem weer voor de wind. Vrijdag 7 mei 1824 is één van die rood-omcirkelde dagen op de kalender van de westerse cultuurgeschiedenis. Die dag gaat Beethovens negende symfonie in première. Helaas gaat het hierna alleen maar bergaf. Neef Karl doet een mislukte zelfmoordpoging en Beethoven is ziek. Het einde is in zicht.

8. ‘Wellingtons Sieg’
Na nieuwe liefdesperikelen, beleeft Beethoven een groot succes met zijn gelegenheidscompositie ‘Wellingtons Sieg’. Ook een herwerkte versie van zijn opera Fidelio verovert alle Europese operahuizen. Beethoven is op het hoogtepunt van zijn roem. Alleen op familiaal vlak zit de wind niet mee. Wanneer in 1815 zijn dierbare broer Kaspar Karl overlijdt, eist hij het voogdijschap op over zijn minderjarig neefje Karl. Het is een verantwoordelijkheid die hem nog heel wat kopzorgen zal bezorgen…

7. Componist van het Vaderland
Na het componeren van de Missa in C en een contract dat hem de status van 'Componist van het Vaderland' bezorgt, lijken Beethovens financiële zorgen voorgoed van de baan. Tot enkele maanden later de Franse troepen voor de poorten van de stad staan. In de zomer van 1812 gaat voor Beethoven een langgekoesterde droom in vervulling. In het kuurstadje Teplitz ontmoet hij zijn allergrootste idool : Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Maar de onbeantwoorde liefde van Josephine blijft hem parten spelen.
