<p>High, Good People is a potcast that explores the historical, social and cultural relationships between people of color and cannabis in the new age of legalization. The show is hosted and produced by Tiara Darnell, a freelance journalist and multimedia producer, Oregon's Budtender of the Year 2017, and a finalist for Spotify's inaugural Sound Up Bootcamp for emerging women of color podcasters.</p><br><p>HGP blends interview and narrative style to give voice to the stories of the communities most disproportionately impacted by the legacy of the War on Drugs. Weed Words With Friends: Is 'Marijuana' Racist?
<p>Is the word "marijuana" racist? Some say it is. Some say it isn't. Who's right? </p><p>Should we ditch marijuana altogether and just use the Greek and Latin derived "cannabis" instead? Or is that cultural erasure?</p><p>And what's up with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_J._Anslinger" target="_blank">Harry Anslinger</a>, the first federal drug czar? He's often cited as the racist bureaucrat who weaponized and racialized marijuana the word and the plant at the expense of Black and Brown communities. We Out Here!
<p>It's not easy being Black in Oregon, a state originally founded as a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/07/racist-history-portland/492035/" target="_blank">white utopia</a>. For Portia Mittons, a transplant from Chicago, it's even harder: She's the only person of color in Sumpter, Oregon--a town more than five hours east of Portland, population, roughly 200 people.
