But then there were some extraordinarily... visionary people like John Dickinson, who at great financial loss of eight to 10,000 pounds sterling, I'm not even sure what monumental amount of money that would mean today, liberated, I believe around 40 enslaved people from the Maryland plantation. And Rufus King was again, a pretty firm opponent of slavery. There were those who could look into the future, or maybe I should say, really look into their hearts and their conscience and go beyond what was so common. […]
