Jacobo Grinberg-Zylberbaum (1946–1994) was a prominent Mexican neurophysiologist and psychologist who dedicated his life to bridging the gap between rigorous science and the mysteries of human consciousness. Motivated by his mother's death from a brain tumor when he was twelve, Grinberg studied psychology at UNAM and earned a doctorate in psychophysiology in New York. He founded laboratories at the Universidad Anáhuac and UNAM, eventually establishing the National Institute for the Study of Consciousness (INPEC) in 1987. His most significant contribution is the Syntergic Theory, which proposes that what we perceive as "reality" is actually a construction emerging from the interaction between the brain's neuronal field and a complex informational matrix called the "lattice" or "pre-spatial field". This work was deeply influenced by his investigation of Mexican shamans, particularly Pachita (Bárbara Guerrero), who reportedly performed miraculous "psychic surgeries". Grinberg believed these shamans could bypass physical limitations and interact directly with the informational matrix. Grinberg’s career was cut short when he mysteriously disappeared on December 8, 1994, just days before his 48th birthday. His vanishing triggered numerous conspiracy theories. Some suggest he was kidnapped by the CIA or NASA to exploit his research on telepathy and mind control for strategic purposes. Others believe he achieved a state of consciousness that allowed him to transcend the physical plane. A more terrestrial hypothesis points to a crime of passion involving his second wife, Teresa Mendoza, whose inconsistent reports and subsequent disappearance raised significant suspicion. With over 50 books published, Grinberg remains a legendary figure whose work continues to challenge our understanding of the untapped potential of the human mind.
