[…] Shortly before dawn, on the morning of the 2nd of July, 1888, 134 officers and men of the 6th Dragoons, 64 from the mounted infantry, 100 Zillulan police, another 140 Basutus, a thousand Ishoi African levies, 500 men of them in Amina's regiment, or a total of about 1,850 men marched off from Inkunjeni for Klopukulu. They reached Chingaina's stronghold at noon and surrounded the mountain. Usutu sharpshooters were placed along the only path that approached the summit, hiding behind the massive boulders and dense bush prevalent in this region. These shooters were driven out, and when the first ridge was taken, the British could see that the Usutu had hidden their women and children in deep gorges far below. […]
