[…] So when you leave all of that out or you treat it as some sort of introductory chapter to the stuff that actually matters about human history, you're missing some really important things about how our species has come to be here and how we have built the world that we've built. Because we didn't start building the world with the Romans. We certainly didn't start building the world with the Industrial Revolution. The legacy of all of these decisions that were made by our ancestors hundreds or thousands of generations back is still with us. We are still living in the world that they made. And what I found when I started digging into prehistory, when I started actually reading, especially the new scholarship that has been popping out over the last 20 years or so, I realized that our textbook account, this kind of upward moving line of progress is just not right.
