[…] Angered by the presence of an increasingly socialist country so close to the United States, the Kennedy administration consequently launched the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, but this only further strengthened Cuba's relationship with the Soviets. By 1962, the Cold War had become a bitter fight for technical and nuclear supremacy. Fueled by tensions over a perceived missile gap between the USA and the USSR, America had placed medium-range ballistic missiles in Turkey that were capable of hitting the Soviets before they had chance to react. When combined with other factors, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev decided the best course of action was to place his own missiles on Cuba. […]
