The Life of Jesus Part 10: I AM… the Gate, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life
Think about the moment the curtain gets pulled back in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy and her companions have made a long journey through real danger and uncertainty.
All because someone told them there was a great and powerful Wizard in the Emerald City who could give them everything they wished for.
A brain for the scarecrow. A heart for the tin man. Courage for the lion. And for Dorothy, a safe journey back home to Kansas.
And when they finally arrive, exhausted and desperate, the Wizard is magnificent. Fire and smoke and a booming voice that fills the room. He is terrifying and overwhelming and utterly convincing.
But then the little dog pulls back a curtain. And there he is, a small, frightened man working levers and speaking into a microphone.

The Life of Jesus Part 9: I AM… Bread and Light
The purpose of John’s Gospel is stated in John 20:30–31 “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
The Gospel of John is unique among the New Testament Gospels.
Rather than a chronological telling of Jesus’ life, John’s Gospel is a biography that selects and arranges episodes from his life in order to show that he is the God of the Old Testament and to lead readers to believing in him for eternal life.

The Life of Jesus Part 8: The Author of Life
John’s objective in the stories he recorded throughout his Gospel is to help his readers understand the true nature of Jesus’ identity and mission.
By telling the story in chapter 5 of a man healed after 38 years of illness, John is showing that new creation is breaking into the old. A sick world is being healed.
And it is Jesus, the author of life, who is bringing this transformation.
And yet the chapter ends with a haunting irony: the religious leaders who search the scriptures looking for eternal life refuse to come to the one to whom those scriptures point.
Life, John insists, is not found in the Scriptures themselves, but in the person to whom they testify.
