Educational Research in the Arts: Giliola Belli (Episode 10)
In this episode, we meet Giliola Belli, the pedagogical leader for Early Childhood Education in the municipal organisation of Bassa Reggiana, Reggio Emilia, Italy. Over the past 20 years, the organisation has developed an impressive network of collaborative projects with several countries, mainly in Europe—such as Germany, England, Iceland, Spain, and Sweden—often funded by the European Union. Since 2008, the pedagogical leaders in Bassa Reggiana have been involved in an educational collaboration with both the Academy of Music and Drama and the HDK-Valand. This collaboration supports the education of students training to become pedagogical and cultural leaders in preschools and schools. Within this context, art, aesthetics, and culture have played a central role in the educational approach. The focus of this conversation is the importance of democratic processes in education, both with young children and in the leadership of teachers. Belli refers to the pedagogical philosopher Loris Malaguzzi, who stated that “education is politics”, meaning that education cannot be neutral or separated from its social and cultural context. This perspective implies that every educational decision has a political impact, as it influences society and promotes the rights and opportunities of children. Malaguzzi believed that involving the community and fostering democratic dialogue is essential to making the school a place of active participation. Children’s rights include respecting their dignity, autonomy, and voice. The right to express individuality should not be confused with individualism. Rights belong to everyone and are also about taking responsibility for one another and valuing diverse perspectives within a democratic society. DETTA AVSNITT ÄR PÅ ENGELSKA I detta avsnitt möter vi den pedagogiska ledaren Giliola Belli, som har arbetat med utveckling av kommunala förskolor och skolor i Bassa Reggiana i Reggio Emilia, Italien. Organisationen har under de senaste 20 åren byggt upp ett imponerande nätverk av samarbetsprojekt med flera europeiska länder, såsom Tyskland, England, Island, Spanien och Sverige – ofta med finansiering från EU. Sedan 2008 deltar de pedagogiska ledarna i Bassa Reggiana i ett utbildningssamarbete med både Högskolan för scen och musik samt HDK-Valand. De har varit delaktiga i utbildningen av studenter till pedagogiska och kulturpedagogiska ledare inom förskola och skola. Konst, estetik och kultur har här varit centrala inslag i utbildningen. Fokus i samtalet ligger på vikten av demokratiska processer i utbildningen av yngre barn, men också i lärarens ledarskap. Belli hänvisar till den pedagogiska filosofen Loris Malaguzzi, som menade att utbildning är politik. Det innebär att utbildning aldrig kan vara neutral eller frikopplad från sitt sociala och kulturella sammanhang. Denna vision innebär att varje utbildningsval har politisk betydelse, eftersom det påverkar samhället och bidrar till att främja barns rättigheter och möjligheter. Malaguzzi ansåg att det är avgörande att involvera samhället i arbetet för en demokratisk dialog – och att skolan därigenom blir en plats för aktivt deltagande. Barns rättigheter handlar om att visa respekt för deras värdighet och autonomi, samt att uppmärksamma deras egna röster. Rätten att uttrycka sin individualitet får dock inte förväxlas med individualism. Rättigheter tillhör alla, och handlar också om ansvarstagande för varandra och för allas perspektiv i en demokrati.
