The Holberg Prize is awarded annually to a scholar who have made outstanding contributions to research in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law or theology. The Prize amounts to NOK 6 000 000.
The Holberg Prize also awards the Nils Klim Prize (NOK 500 000) to young Nordic scholars in the same academic fields.

Lyndal Roper: "Who Owns Fertility? The Reformation's Sex Politics"
On Wednesday 3 June, 2026, Lyndal Roper held her Holberg Lecture "Who Owns Fertility? The Reformation's Sexual Politics" in the University Aula in Bergen, Norway. This lecture is the Laureate’s academic statement during the Holberg Week.
In her lecture, Roper asks: "How is fertility a force in history? What happens when people try to regulate who can have children, or who owns them? And when and why do religious movements seek to control sexuality?"
Lyndal Roper is Regius Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Oxford. She was awarded the 2026 Holberg Prize for her pioneering work on early modern European history.

This lecture: " Storying the Person in a Mental Health Crisis" by Majse Lind was held as part of the 2026 Nils Klim Symposium, which took place in the University Aula in Bergen on 2 June. In her lecture, Lind focus on the role of personality, especially narrative identity – the evolving story people construct to make sense of themselves and their lives.
Majse Lind is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Aalborg. She was awarded the Nils Klim Prize in 2026.

Interview with Lyndal Roper: The 2026 Holberg Prize Laureate
Professor Lyndal Roper is the 2026 Holberg Laureate. Roper is the Regius Chair of History at the University of Oxford emeritus.
In this interview, conducted by Matt Pickles in March 2026, Roper talks about her background, her research and the challenges and opportunities facing the humanities.
Professor Roper is internationally recognized as one of the leading scholars of early modern European history. Her pioneering studies have reshaped understandings of witch persecutions, the German Peasants’ War (1524–1525), and the life and thought of Martin Luther, illuminating how gender, the body, psyche and power operated in social and religious conflicts of the sixteenth century.
