Homily Rewind | "I Just Show Up" — 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Fr. Terry Keehan

Fr. Terry Keehan was watching Gerald Jones scoop scrambled eggs at a parish breakfast when he asked him: "Gerald, you ever think God is calling you to do this?" Gerald didn't miss a beat. "Father, I ain't called. I just show up."

That response — and the assumption behind it — is exactly what this homily takes on. Because the question isn't what's my purpose in life? It's what is God's purpose for you? And Fr. Terry believes, with his whole heart, that God has one for every single person.

Using Solomon's request for a wise and understanding heart and the three parables of Matthew 13 — the found treasure, the searched-for pearl, the fishing net — this homily offers a simple framework for discernment: What have you found? What are you searching for? And what have you caught that still needs sorting?

Holy Family Parish | Inverness, IL | holyfamilyparish.org/podcasts

WWW | "What Are You Looking For?" — 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Fr. Terry Keehan

God appeared to Solomon in a dream — the ultimate state of rest, when the deepest hidden realities surface. And Solomon asked not simply for wisdom, but for a wise and understanding heart. Fr. Terry Keehan says that's a prayer worth making our own.

Drawing from 1 Kings 3, Romans 8, and the closing parables of Matthew 13, this episode uses three simple questions as a framework for discernment: What have you found in life? What are you searching for? And what have you caught — and can you separate the good from the bad?

Holy Family Parish | Inverness, IL | holyfamilyparish.org/podcasts

IAV | "The Pearl" — 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Dawn Mayer

On the day of her mother's funeral, Dawn Mayer wore her mother's pearls — the earrings, the necklace, the ring, the brooch. Someone called them "vintage." Dawn just thought of them as her mom's. Valuable beyond any price tag.

That image became her way into this week's Gospel: the Pearl of Great Price.

Drawing together the full arc of Matthew 13's parables — the sower, the weeds and wheat, the mustard seed, the leaven, and finally the hidden treasure and the pearl — Dawn reflects on what it actually costs to say yes to the kingdom. The word is planted freely. But embracing it means being willing to let go of some other things. And ultimately, the sorting belongs to God.

Holy Family Parish | Inverness, IL | holyfamilyparish.org/podcasts
