7 Simple Real Reasons You Lose Motivation in October
Prefer to listen? This is Episode 4 of the Confident Homeschool Mom podcast. https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Why-Do-I-Lose-Motivation-Homeschooling-Every-October_.mp3 Why do you lose motivation homeschooling every October? Your plan might feel as slow as molasses. At this time of the year, many moms assume they need a better routine or more motivation. Often, though, the real issue isn’t motivation at all. It’s capacity: how much you can actually hold this week, in this season, as a real human being. Sometimes the real struggle isn’t choosing a method; it’s the overwhelm underneath it. Take my free quiz to find out what’s really driving your homeschool overwhelm (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/), so you can make choices from clarity instead of pressure. Take the Free Quiz (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) Why You Lose Motivation Homeschooling by October You created your plan back in June. Or maybe you created it at a homeschool conference in May in the vendor hall (done that!). Or, if you’ve been homeschooling for many years, maybe it was officially created in late July or August. No matter when you created it, your first month or two were built on hope and anticipation. You had a new plan, new activities, maybe a new stack of books, and excitement about the year ahead. But by mid-October, that anticipation turns into more ordinary, predictable energy. Perhaps the skies are grayer outside your home, literally. And if you’re perimenopausal, that fog might be inside your brain too, as you forget how to explain fractions mid-sentence and feel like you need to crash at two in the afternoon. Meanwhile, many women who lose motivation homeschooling read it as a personal failing and decide they aren’t doing enough. They don’t think they have the wherewithal to do this life well. Some say they need a better routine (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-create-a-homeschool-routine/). Others say that, despite wanting one, they don’t have the executive functioning to make it happen. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-homeschool-when-everyone-has-adhd-and-youre-exhausted/) Here’s the thing, though: when you lose motivation homeschooling, it’s likely not a better schedule you need. My Septembers: The Seasons of a Homeschool Every September, I implemented a new schedule, a new plan, and a new excitement about our upcoming year. That was true every single year, except the years we visited West Africa and Italy. In those years, we began our homeschool routines much later. (But you know, we were still learning!) (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/travelling-as-a-unit-study/) Still, I did this long enough to know what comes next, and that my energy changed right along with the seasons. There are seasonal shifts in a homeschool. I have not ALWAYS done any one thing, and I’m fairly sure that, if you’ve done this long lifestyle enough, neither have you. (I’ve written more about the seasons in our homeschool (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/seasons-of-homeschooling/)if you’d like to see how they’ve played out for us.) I didn’t always schedule six months of formal studies. I didn’t always radically unschool (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-do-i-unschool-my-child-5-ways-to-move-towards-it-in-your-homeschool/). And I didn’t always use Charlotte Mason’s principles (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/the-basics-of-a-charlotte-mason-homeschool/), or a classical approach (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/the-classical-homeschool-method/), or project-based homeschooling (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/the-homeschool-project-season/), or child-led learning (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/child-led-learning-benefits-your-homeschool-kids-will-love/). But I have done ALL of them, at different times. When Unschooling Wasn’t the Cure-All After a couple of years of traditional homeschooling, or really, attempting to create a private school in our home, we entered a season of deschooling (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/tag/how-to-deschool/). That was when I first read John Holt’s Why Children Fail (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/john-holt-pat-farenga-teach-homeschoolers-how-to-learn/). His work radically shifted how I saw learning and what education really means (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/what-is-an-education-anyway/). I sat my oldest daughter down at the local Starbucks and told her we would never do the traditional approach again. She could learn her way. What I didn’t understand then was that unschooling wasn’t a panacea for the resistance I was experiencing (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/5-reasons-your-homeschool-child-wont-do-work-how-to-motivate-your-child/). Six months later, we resumed a routine. It looked different from the first, and it was oriented to the kids right in front of me. Some of our kids craved routine, so much so that one asked me for a planner, colored markers, and activities to be responsible for every day. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Quotes-Coupons-2.png) We Start with “Let’s Do a Formal Homeschool Routine” in September Here is what I often see. We start with, “Let’s do a formal homeschool routine.” Then we get tired of that, and despite things not quite working, we white-knuckle our way to Christmas. December is kind of fun, so we embrace that season. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/unschooling-christmas-studies/) Our energy might renew after Christmas, or it might not. January might bring more documentary days or field trips. By February, you may be researching the local school system because nothing seems to be working. By March, you’re looking forward to spring so you can head outside for nature and play. Charlotte Mason feels fitting for spring, when you can sketch and write poems outdoors. By May, you might be hankering to be done with the schedule altogether, and by summer you’ve declared yourself an unschooler. We don’t all follow that identical seasonal shift. But watch yourself, and you’ll discover you have a notable one, and it may explain why you lose motivation for homeschooling at the same time each year. And if you’d like a gentler way to let your homeschool hold more than one season at once, I wrote about allowing for two seasons in your homeschool (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/two-seasons-in-our-home-formal-studies-and-project-based-learning-unschooling/). You’re Not Inconsistent, You’re a Seasonal Being If we haven’t factored ourselves into the mix of our homeschool years, we’ll also notice, right on cue, the season of overwhelm or burnout. Sometimes it arrives in years two, three, or four. Sometimes it comes later. Hopefully, that season compels you to release what isn’t working so you can recapture what is, instead of staying lost in the busyness of routine, children’s demands, and unrealistic expectations. If you resonate with this, I want you to hear: this isn’t a sign of inconsistency. You’re not inconsistent. You’re a seasonal being. Your capacity shifts for various reasons, and your energy has monthly shifts, for certain. But that idealized homeschool schedule is unaware that a human is at the helm. A schedule asks: did you get it all done? Your capacity asks: how much are you able to hold today, this week? Overwhelm isn’t a sign that you’re incapable. It’s a load problem. There is simply too much to do, and it doesn’t align with reality. So you don’t need more structure, a better routine, or better systems, at least not at the root, because those things don’t touch the root of the problem. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Quotes-Coupons-1.png) Lose Motivation Homeschooling? Start With What You’re Carrying If it’s a load problem, the first step is to get clear on what the load actually is. A time audit (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/product/time-blocking-guide-for-homeschool-moms/) and a capacity audit (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/product/a-realistic-planning-tool-for-homeschool-moms-capacity-rhythm-workbook/)will show you, and I’ve created a resource for each. One mom shared her experience of the Time Audit in the Collective; she realized she was doing SO much in her day. That wasn’t what she expected to see, because she felt like she wasn’t doing enough. And it’s what I hear again and again from moms when they do their time audits. On paper, they see they aren’t lazy. Still, they might be doing a lot of things that aren’t really what they want to do. They aren’t doing anything personally fuelling. They aren’t asking their partner to cover so they can get a break. And they don’t assume they’re owed any time for themselves in the first place. Often, they simply aren’t clear on what really matters to them, and that is where motivation and capacity leak away. When we accept that we can’t do everything, and that we need to do the things that fuel our joy and energy, we build capacity. When Your Body Changes the Math, and You Lose Motivation Homeschooling Some things that deplete our capacity are part of our female story: our monthly hormonal shift, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause. I’m a coach, not a doctor. I do have a women’s health nursing background, and I’m married to a medical doctor, so I know that he and his peers weren’t taught about perimenopause in the mid-90s. It’s only really becoming part of the cultural conversation now, and many helpful resources are emerging, such as Dr. Mary Claire Haver’s. If any of this sounds like you, a conversation with your healthcare provider is a good place to start. Perimenopause is not just hot flashes, and it can be one reason you lose motivation in life in general. It can be brain fog that arrives mid-sentence, so you forget what you were saying. (That has literally happened to me on the podcast.) Some women describe a rollercoaster of emotions. Sleep may no longer feel restful, and the energy that used to carry you through the afternoon isn’t there anymore. If you’re wondering whether perimenopause is part of your story right now, I’ve written more about it here: 4 Steps for Homeschool Moms in Perimenopause (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-reclaim-yourself-at-40-4-steps-for-homeschool-moms-in-perimenopause/). (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Quotes-Coupons-3.png) The Calendar on the Fridge In my first book, Homeschool Mama Self-Care: Nurturing the Nurturer, (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/5-reasons-why-self-care-is-essential-for-homeschool-moms/) I wrote about marking our cycle on a monthly calendar on the fridge. That way, we knew when to expect variable energy and emotions, and the kids were forewarned. I jest, sort of. In my reality, my kids already knew, because I was buying potato chips and peanut M&Ms. There are no mysteries in a homeschool. And you know what my kids said when they saw it on the calendar? They said: oh, THAT’S what’s happening. And I said: yes. That’s what’s happening. Also, I had three daughters, so it was happening a LOT later in our homeschool years. Then I began perimenopausing, and putting it on the calendar stopped mattering, because it doesn’t like calendars. Perimenopause isn’t predictable. Whether you recognize it or not, it’s influencing your energy and capacity. Why It Feels Like Something Is Wrong With You Here’s the challenge: you think you’re less capable than you used to be, and that something is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you! Your body is going through a massive transition while you’re also running a household, a homeschool, and a life. And when you homeschool, it hits differently. You can’t call in sick and you can’t easily take a mental health day. You’re “on” from the moment you wake up until bedtime. From my own experience, perimenopause has felt like my body changing its priorities. In some ways that’s been amazing, because it reordered my life priorities. In other ways it hasn’t: the sleep interruptions, the unexpected emotional ebbs and flows, and the need to eat differently and lift weights. Pregnancy, postpartum, PMS, and perimenopause teach us the same thing. We can’t ignore our bodies as we homeschool. They directly declare our bandwidth and our energy, and we have to pay attention. And I haven’t even touched on what else shapes your capacity: a spouse who isn’t supportive, health challenges, a partner who’s away for work, aging parents, mental health struggles, grief, or working outside the home too. All of it matters. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Quotes-Coupons-3-1.png) Why You Are the Most Important Curriculum in Your Homeschool I say you’re the most important curriculum in your homeschool because what your kids get every day isn’t only the learning activities. It’s you: your energy, your patience, your capacity. When you’re nurtured, you give differently than when you’re depleted. If you lose motivation homeschooling, you might wonder whether you need a better schedule, or whether you’re doing enough; instead, ask yourself about your energy and your capacity instead. And girlfriend, be realistic with yourself! Here’s the question I’d like you to ask yourself this week: what season are you in right now? Not the season you think you should be in, but the one you’re actually in. How much energy do you have? What can you actually hold in it? No pressure to have an answer. It’s just worth noticing. Next Step: Module 3 of the Reimagine Mini-Course If you want to go further, Module 3 of the Reimagine Your Homeschool mini-course, You Don’t Need a Better Schedule (https://www.subscribepage.com/reimagine-your-homeschool), is where we look at what you’re actually doing, what fuels you, and what you can actually hold this season. Come to the Live Reset And if you need more than a module, there’s a live option coming. If you’d rather work through it with other moms and leave with a personalized 30-day reset plan, I’m hosting my 2-Hour Homeschool Reset workshop (https://capturing-the-charmed-life.teachable.com/p/homeschool-mama-intensive-for-overcoming-overwhelm) on Friday, October 30. A recording is available if you can’t make it live. Save My Spot for the 2-Hour Homeschool Reset (https://capturing-the-charmed-life.teachable.com/p/homeschool-mama-intensive-for-overcoming-overwhelm) Quick Answers: Why You Lose Motivation Homeschooling Why do I lose motivation homeschooling every October? Your first month or two run on hope and anticipation. By mid-October, the energy becomes more ordinary, and the load often doesn’t match reality. Losing motivation homeschooling at that point usually points to overwhelm as a load problem, not a sign that you’re incapable. What is capacity, and how does it affect motivation? It’s how much you actually hold, today and this week, given your energy, your season of life, and your load. A schedule asks whether you got it all done. Capacity asks how much you can hold. Can perimenopause affect homeschooling? Oh yeah, girlfriend! It can. Some women notice brain fog, disrupted sleep, emotional swings, and energy dips. I’m a coach, not a doctor, so if this sounds like you, talk with your healthcare provider. Do I need a better schedule? Not at the root. If you keep losing motivation homeschooling, look at your capacity first. More structure, a better routine, or better systems don’t touch what’s underneath. Start by clarifying what you’re carrying and what you can hold in the season you’re in. How To Understand Homeschool Mom Anger: You Need To Know
Prefer to listen? This is Episode 3 of the Confident Homeschool Mom podcast. Has your kiddo ever caught you hiding in the closet with a box of Oreo cookies? Or maybe you’ve lost your temper with your kids, the very thing you told yourself you absolutely shouldn’t do. Homeschool mom anger is far more common than we admit, and it rarely means you’re failing. The emotional atmosphere of your home is a curriculum in and of itself. In fact, emotional training is the unspoken curriculum we’re all teaching, and wish we could do perfectly. In this episode, I want to bring YOUR emotions into focus instead, because you are the most important curriculum in your homeschool. In Episode 2, we started with R: How to Create a Homeschool Vision Statement (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-create-a-compelling-homeschool-vision-statement-make-this-the-best-homeschool-year-yet/). In this episode, we’re on E, establishing emotional regulation. These two are part of the Reimagine framework I use in coaching every week. To catch the full framework, watch the Reimagine Masterclass here. (https://www.subscribepage.com/homeschool-life-coach) Before you read on: if you want to name what’s actually driving your overwhelm, start with the free Wheel of Personal Growth. Take the Free Quiz (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) Everything You Do for Yourself, You’re Doing for Your Kids Too I want to encourage you right off the top. As soon as we start talking about big emotions, including homeschool mom anger, guilt can show up. And understandably, because we are imperfect human beings. Many of us were never taught any emotional regulation, yet our culture suggests we expertly handle our kids’ big emotions. So here’s the encouragement: everything you do for yourself, you’re doing for your kiddo too. I once interviewed Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big Life, on the podcast (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/the-not-so-big-life-with-sarah-susanka/). The day before we spoke, a homeschool friend told me she thought she’d seriously screwed up her kids, maybe even done permanent damage. So I pitched that thought to Sarah, and she declared, you can’t! As soon as you move toward your own personal growth and shift how you’re showing up (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/grow-yourself-up-a-guide-for-homeschool-mom-personal-growth/), thinking, and engaging, you naturally invite your kids to shift too. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will. They might choose not to. But most kids want that. Most kids want to know their parent is leading, and that she cares deeply about walking in a direction that works for her and for them. That’s how you grow closer and create a safe, nurturing space together. The Music of Your Home Is there a piece of music that feels like it almost speaks the language of your soul? For me, on many mornings, it’s the Peer Gynt Suite. I put it on as I wake up and make my cappuccino in the AeroPress. On the mornings I choose this piece, it feels like what I feel inside. Now picture the opposite. You walk into a really loud space, with music blaring, and you can’t quite hear the person in front of you. You’re lip-reading, at best. Meanwhile, you’d rather be sitting over coffee, really hearing someone’s story, or feeling like they really heard yours. Or try this: type “singing bowls, ten-minute meditation” into YouTube. Just listen first. Notice how it draws your energy in. Then take a look at the thumbnail. A man in an interesting outfit rubs what looks like a drum mallet around ceramic bowls, with a cat in the middle on a cushion. My husband refrained from calling it weird, howeva, when you’re married for nearly three decades, you read their facial expressions well. I thought, what a peaceful life that appears to be. Music can take us away. It can bring us to a more regulated, peaceful, and satisfied space. So when we hit the right emotional note within ourselves, we feel most alive, centered, and present. Homeschool mom anger, in other words, is often a sign that the note is off, not that you are. https://youtu.be/pgRrY1d-O7A?si=CStB25Mvo6cxg6gn What Homeschool Mom Anger Can Look Like Then I consider the alternative. Here’s a mish-mash of other moms’ lives on a Monday morning. You’re trying to get out the door to your homeschool co-op, where your kids and your friend’s kids homeschool together. And you love these people. But your kids haven’t got their things together, even though you pre-warned them twice yesterday and twice today. Then, twenty minutes late, you discover a tap left on in the basement. The bathroom floor is flooded. You don’t have time to clean it up, but you can’t possibly afford a new carpet installation. So you call your friend and say you’re sorry, you can’t come yet. And the whole week starts shifting toward cacophony and frustration. It’s not even Monday lunch yet! What kind of music would you call that? Music is regulating. But some days, even many days, the energy in our homes is dysregulating. The Woman Living Inside That Monday She loses it more often than she’d like to admit. She’s frequently irritable, and she feels touched out and talked out, with too many questions to answer at once. Meanwhile, her kiddos aren’t emotionally regulated either. She doesn’t tell her co-op friends she’s hiding in the closet with a box of Oreos. Or that by the end of that day, she’s googling: “Burned out homeschool mom — what do I do?” She can’t disappoint anyone. But she also wants to keep doing this, because she knows it’s an ideal opportunity for her kids. And she resents it, but then feels guilty for feeling resentful toward the people she’s doing it for. If that list sounds like you, I’ve also written about 6 challenges every struggling homeschool mom faces — and how to transform them. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/reimagine-homeschool-help-for-the-struggling-homeschool-mom/) (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/pexels-photo-20955037.jpeg) My Own Homeschool Mom Anger Story I shared in my book, Homeschool Mama Self-Care: Nurturing the Nurturer (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/5-reasons-why-self-care-is-essential-for-homeschool-moms/), that my big emotions were one of the greatest challenges in my homeschool life. Surprisingly, it wasn’t figuring out how to teach algebra, because I got someone to teach my kids that when that came up. I was losing it way too often. Anger was my ever-present companion. My co-teacher, even. And my kids knew her too well. The Monday I Heard My Own Voice One Monday, I woke up late to cold coffee on my bedside table and chaos already happening in the kitchen. The sweet older girls were trying to help the younger kids get breakfast. It was a messy morning, with rising tension amongst most of us. I tried to pull everyone together, but everything felt loud and jagged. Then, half an hour later, we sat down in the family room for our morning basket and a read-aloud. A fight broke out between two kids over who would sit next to me. And then I heard a sharp voice, way too loud and intense, filling the room, and realized it was mine. That morning, I was the mom in this post. Touched out and talked out, and metaphorically hiding in the closet with a box of Oreos, because I wasn’t telling myself the truth. That Monday was homeschool mom anger from the inside. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/perfectionistic-homeschool-mom/) So I left to my bedroom and slumped on the floor at the end of my bed. I texted a friend, and she told me to watch a YouTube video. It turned out to be one of Brené Brown’s first TEDx talks. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-brene-brown-rescued-me-from-one-of-those-homeschool-days/) I can’t tell you its message with full clarity today, because it was a very long time ago. Still, it showed me that I was trying to be endlessly available to everyone else while being completely unavailable to myself (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/exhausted-homeschool-mom-8-things-that-will-give-you-hope/). I didn’t know who I was, what I needed, or what I wanted. But maybe I had to figure out how to be with myself, so I could be properly with my kids. https://youtu.be/tKAHtvNuYo8?si=iqIiiGf4fGnxY_K8 Why Homeschool Mom Anger Is the Tip of the Iceberg Here’s what I know now. Most of us were never taught to feel, listen to, and process our feelings. Many of us never had that modeled. I certainly didn’t. Instead, I tried to stuff my anger, because it wasn’t convenient and because anger scared me since childhood. I’d think: this surely isn’t good for me, and it’s surely worse for my kids. Anger is just the tip of the iceberg, with a whole mass of feelings hidden underneath the surface. That massive chunk beneath the surface causes real damage. And that unseen mass is almost impossible to see on our own. That’s also why more structure, better systems, and a new planner don’t touch homeschool mom anger. Those things aren’t wrong inherently, but they just don’t reach what’s underneath. One Small Thing That Changed My Mornings The first thing that started me on a different path with homeschool mom anger was remarkably simple. I attended a Dr. Daniel Amen webinar. Then I set an alarm on my iPod for 11 a.m., right when the Monday meltdowns typically hit. Hand on my heart, a few simple questions, just for me. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-positively-influence-my-homeschool-mama-thoughts-so-i-can-enjoy-my-homeschool/) It felt small, and it was, but over time, it changed me. Later, in the early days of coaching, one of my clients told me she was routinely practicing this long after we worked together. She was tired of losing her marbles with her kids. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-homeschool-without-losing-your-mind-in-11-steps/) So she set a reminder on her phone. Once or twice a day, she’d pause, put her hand on her heart, and check in with herself: How are you doing? Are you feeling okay? What do you need? After a few weeks of doing that consistently, her kids began doing it with her, without being asked. They’d hear the reminder, and they’d stop and breathe alongside her. She wasn’t teaching them emotional regulation. (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/category/confident-homeschooling/real-homeschool-mom-life-podcast-season-5/homeschool-moms-big-emotions-self-compassion/) (She wasn’t pinning emotional regulation emoji faces onto her fridge, although you can totally do that, too. I have one on mine still!) They were simply noticing what she was doing. She modeled it, and they absorbed it. What Is the Music of Your Home Right Now? Here’s a question to carry with you: what is the music of your home right now? Is it regulating, or dysregulating? No pressure to have an answer. It’s just worth noticing, including where homeschool mom anger shows up in that music. Next Step: Module 2 of the Reimagine Mini-Course If you want to go deeper into homeschool mom anger, maybe because there’s something you haven’t wanted to acknowledge out loud, or this post feels pretty convicting, or you really do need to cut down on your Oreo consumption, well, girlfriend, this is the work. Module 2 of the Reimagine Your Homeschool mini-course, Handling Big Emotions (Yours & Theirs) (https://capturing-the-charmed-life.teachable.com/p/reimagine-your-homeschool), walks you through what to do in the moment and what to do with what’s underneath. Find it below. Get the Reimagine Your Homeschool Mini-Course (https://www.subscribepage.com/reimagine-your-homeschool) (https://www.subscribepage.com/reimagine-your-homeschool) Quick Answers About Homeschool Mom Anger Why do I snap at my kids even when I’m trying so hard? Most of us were never taught to feel, listen to, and process our feelings. Anger is often the tip of an iceberg, with a mass of feelings hidden underneath. Trying harder doesn’t reach what you can’t see. Is homeschool mom anger normal? Homeschool mom anger is common. When you’re touched out, talked out, and asked too many questions at once, losing it more than you’d like to admit is a sign of an overly heavy load, and possibly of big emotions that were never acknowledged or processed. Do my kids really change when I change? Often, they’re invited to. As you move toward your own growth, your kids are naturally invited to shift too. They might choose not to, but most kids want to see their parent leading. Can you homeschool and never get angry? You already know the answer. NO, but you can learn better how to acknowledge it and process it. Ready to Chip Away at Your Homeschool Mom Anger? You can’t overcome all your internal challenges in one fell swoop. You can’t dismantle the whole iceberg underneath the water. But you can begin chipping away at it. You are not just the educator, the planner, the one who holds it all together. You are a whole person with needs, desires, and a life worth nurturing. How to Create a Homeschool Vision Statement: Make This the Best Homeschool Year Yet!
Prefer to listen? I go even deeper on this in Episode 2 of the podcast — “Root Yourself in Your Vision.” There were seasons of homeschooling that weren’t easy; they weren’t freedom-filled, and I got really REALLY tired of the homeschool thing. I will show you how to create a homeschool vision statement. Ever feel like you’re running a private school at home instead of living the freedom-filled homeschool life you dreamed of? Trust me, I’ve been there. But first, does this sound familiar? Maybe you’re struggling with: Trying to keep a private school at home Hoping your house will stay clean (ha!) Navigating relational issues with your kids Feeling like you’re always defending your homeschool choice Getting upset daily because of kid conflict, big emotions, or complaints about routines (If this list hit close to home, I’ve also written about 6 Great Challenges Every Struggling Homeschool Mom Faces — and How to Transform Them (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/reimagine-homeschool-help-for-the-struggling-homeschool-mom/).) Before we go any further — if any of that sounds familiar, start here. Take the free 8 Things quiz to name what’s actually driving your overwhelm right now. It takes about five minutes, and it’ll make everything below land more specifically for you. Take the Free Quiz: Overwhelmed Homeschool Mom’s Wheel of Personal Growth (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) (https://teresa-wycroiny.scoreapp.com/) The Story I Didn’t Expect to Tell You A few years ago, I went in for a routine eye exam. I’d been nearsighted since grade six — decades of it, so normal to me I’d stopped noticing it wasn’t. But something had shifted. Things felt a little darker at night. Meanwhile, headlights from oncoming cars started genuinely aggravating me — which was strange, because I am not, as a rule, a “triggered driver.” At first, my optometrist couldn’t tell exactly what was going on. Possibly MS. Possibly something behind my eyes. Understandably unsettling. The actual answer, from my ophthalmologist: cataracts. (Officially too young for those, thank you very much.) Here’s what nobody prepared me for. When they removed the cataracts and replaced the lenses, I didn’t just go back to how I used to see. Instead, I stopped being nearsighted entirely — for the first time since childhood. Suddenly, I could read signs a mile down the road. My family was in awe. In fact, I didn’t return to some earlier baseline. I saw better than I ever had. That’s what this work does for your homeschool vision, too. It’s not about getting back some clarity you lost. It’s about seeing further than you’ve ever seen — for the first time, not the first time in a while. Why Every Homeschool Needs a Vision Statement Years ago, at a homeschool conference, someone challenged me to create a vision statement. My first thought? “I don’t have time for that!” Months later, half-jokingly, we wrote our first one anyway. My kids and I, together. Here’s just the first couple lines: “We, the Wiedrick siblings, in order to form a more healthy relationship and have a happier home, do solemnly intend to do the following: help a sibling out, take turns, and share…” (I won’t share the whole thing — it went on much longer.) It went on the fridge. In fact, it stayed there for a very long time. And though it was mostly written by a couple of pre- and early-adolescent homeschool teens who were at the absolute end of their patience with younger siblings — that fridge document actually set the tone for our vision and our expectations, for years. Later, I started choosing one word for the year, just for myself. Sometimes a word for each child, each year. Sometimes it was a whole blog post where I worked through what our vision actually was for that particular homeschool season. It became a practice, not a project. But here’s what I didn’t realize back then: a vision statement becomes the Google Maps of your homeschool journey. It tells you how to get where you’re going, what turns to take, and helps you navigate the terrain. That’s exactly why you need to create a homeschool vision statement of your own. https://youtu.be/IXBwX4dxFlc?si=Z4Z3UwQnK4fSi6vF This is How to Create a Homeschool Vision Statement Together Step 1: Envision Your Ideal Homeschool Day Take 15 quiet minutes (I know, I know, it’s hard to find 15 minutes – but find them! This matters.) and imagine your ideal homeschool day: What time does everyone wake up? What’s the atmosphere in your home? How are your kids engaging with learning? What does connection look like? How do you feel at the end of the day? Write down everything that stands out. For me, the word “freedom” kept appearing. Which led to some uncomfortable questions… Once I had that word, I started asking myself the question constantly. In fact, it became a ritual — during this fifteen-minute window I’d carve out after lunch. First, coffee. Then, a couple of Italian cookies I kept hidden under the white armchair in the corner of my bedroom, so nobody else would find them. Just fifteen quiet minutes with my own thoughts. So: is what we’re doing today actually serving freedom? Also, are the activities we picked this week serving freedom? And is the way I’m making my kid sit through this workbook actually serving freedom? Which led to some uncomfortable questions… Was it freedom that: Equipped me to keep an 8:00 to 3:30 schedule? Required me to check off every box in that expensive curriculum? Compelled me to keep my home pristine? Fueled my approach to kid conflict? (Spoiler alert: NOPE!) …that one word became the seed I used to create a homeschool vision statement I actually stuck with. Step 2: Align Your Values for Your Vision Statement Grab some index cards and write down words that matter to you. Here are some to start: Freedom Connection Curiosity Growth Joy Peace Creativity Adventure (ps — go to Google for more value words) Sort them into three piles: “Must Have,” “Nice to Have,” and “Not Essential for Us.” Pick your top 5. These become your compass points. (Stuck on finding your own word? Want to go even deeper than index cards? The Reimagine Your Homeschool mini-course walks you through this exact process, step by step, for $17. Get the Reimagine Your Homeschool Mini-Course to assess, realign, and create your vision! (https://www.subscribepage.com/reimagine-your-homeschool) (https://www.subscribepage.com/reimagine-your-homeschool) Step 3: Reality-Check Your Homeschool Vision Statement Draw a circle and divide it into 8 sections: Academic Progress Family Relationships Physical Environment Parental Well-being/Engagement Child Well-being/Engagement Life Skills Community Connection Resource Management Rate your satisfaction in each area from 1-10. This shows you where your vision might need extra attention. When I did this exercise years later, I discovered something profound: clarifying my values helped me know whether this homeschool thing was really accomplishing what I had deeply hoped – freedom. Turning Your Vision Statement into a Homeschool GPS A finished homeschool vision statement helps you: Make curriculum choices that align with your values (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-choose-the-right-homeschool-currculum/) Handle routine or schedule decisions with confidence (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/6-game-changing-ways-to-streamline-your-homeschool-routines/) Navigate challenging days with purpose (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/how-to-deal-with-those-homeschool-days/) Say “no” to things that don’t serve your family’s mission (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/9-typical-homeschool-mom-boundary-challenges-how-to-overcome-them/) Say “yes” to opportunities that matter most (https://capturingthecharmedlife.com/what-really-matters-in-your-homeschool-journey/) This isn’t just another task on your to-do list. Rather, it’s the foundation for building the homeschool life you’re dreaming of — one where your values and your daily reality actually match up. And when I finally leaned into that value, everything changed. Ready to create your vision statement?
