[…] This was a time when museums played an even bigger role in the public's access to knowledge. In a lot of instances, taxidermy was the only way that people can see some of these animals. That was really the intent of natural history dioramas, specifically. This is George Dante, an experienced taxidermist himself and president of a non-profit that's dedicated to preserving the history of exhibits for natural history museums. He says Carl Akeley revolutionized the way taxidermy was done. Akeley basically saw what we were doing with taxidermy at that time and understood that it was very crude. We were, I don't like to use the term stuffing animals, but if you imagine taking a skin and, you know, trying to fill it with a loose material, whether it be cotton or sisal or hay or something like that, you're not going to get a very accurate animal.
