Hope Within Reach began with a simple idea: I wanted to leave something behind for my grandkids.
Someday, if they ever wondered about their Gramps—where I came from, what I've lived through, what I've learned, and where God showed up along the way—I wanted them to be able to hear the stories in my own voice.
But somewhere along the way, I realized these stories might be meant for more than just my family.
I'm Steve “Gramps” Towler, and on Hope Within Reach, I share stories about family, recovery, grief, loss, faith, laughter, love, and the moments that have shaped my life.
These aren't stories from someone who has life figured out. They're stories from someone who's lived some of it—and who has seen the faithfulness of God through some very difficult places.
Maybe somewhere in my story, you'll recognize a piece of yours.

Some stories are too important to tell only through the way they ended.
In this deeply personal episode of Hope Within Reach, I want you to meet my sister Cindy — my sweet, beautiful Seeeeester.
I don't want to begin by telling you how Cindy died. I want to tell you how she lived.
Cindy was my big sister, and I was her LB — Little Brother. Our lives were changed when we were separated as children, but the bond between us remained. And somehow, even through illness, grief, laughter, family, and some of the hardest days imaginable, Cindy kept doing what she had always done: bringing people together.
In this episode, you'll hear Cindy in her own voice. You'll see pieces of our story together. I'll share what it meant to watch my Warrior Princess fight, the last word she ever spoke to me — BRODER — and the faith that continues to carry me through losing her.
This isn't only a story about death.
It's a story about a sister. A family. Love. Faith. Grief. And Hope.

40 Years Later: What I Was Really Longing For.
Forty years ago, Kathie and I said "I do." But for me, this anniversary means so much more than celebrating four decades of marriage.
When I was five years old, my mom dropped me off for my first day of kindergarten right here in Northfield and left to begin a new life. My world changed that day. And from a very young age, there was one thing I deeply longed for:
Someday, I wanted a family.
In this episode of Hope Within Reach, I share the unlikely story of how Kathie and I met, what these 40 years have meant to me, and some of the joy, mistakes, reconciliation, grief, and Hope our family has experienced along the way.
This isn't a story about a perfect marriage or a perfect family. And it's not meant to measure your story against mine — whether your marriage ended, never happened, or looks nothing like you hoped. This is about looking back and seeing the faithfulness of God — even through circumstances I never would have chosen.

Ditch to Ditch: The Journey That Brought Me Home
A 180-day Navy deployment around the world ended with a Red Cross message that changed everything: my dad had suffered a stroke.
In 1987, while serving aboard the USS Emory S. Land, I found myself in the middle of a season that seemed to change everything at once.
A tragedy next door forced Kathie and me to leave our home. A serious car accident followed. Then came an unexpected friendship with two Minnesota neighbors who, amazingly, had ties to the very same Navy ship.
Not long after that, I left on a 180-day deployment around the world — “Ditch to Ditch,” through the Suez Canal and back through the Panama Canal.
And near the end of that journey, a Red Cross message reached me:
My dad had suffered a stroke.
There I was, thousands of miles from Minnesota, trying to find out how he was doing—and wondering when I would be able to get home.
This episode is about distance, friendship, faith, family, and one unforgettable moment when I finally walked into my dad’s hospital room wearing my Navy uniform.
And the look on his face when he saw me...
I still carry that with me. ❤️
Some memories stay with us for a lifetime.
And sometimes, looking back, we can see Hope woven through places we never would have chosen to walk through.
