A trio of dog trainers in the west of Scotland discussing all things dog training.
Covering basics, to sports trialing to training trainers, we get it!
Collaboratively we run Glasgow Dog Obedience & Ayrshire Dog Obedience whilst also running other pet dog training services.
Your main hosts are Lhanna, Lanette & Amie.
PSA: Series 1 & 2 were recorded under the name House of Herders: Dog professionals podcast.
Amie & I discuss why the problem in a behaviour case is never just 'the problem' and how the process is actually much wider.
We discuss how we as trainers over simplify things vs how these tasks seem OTT from the owners perspective.
Dipping into our time in the training field and more recently during our walk and trains, we discuss the threaded nature of these tasks growing what feels like arms and legs.

Pet dog vs Sport dog training

Lhanna, Lanette & Amie discuss the differences we have found since moving into teaching dog sports. Coming from being strictly pet dog trainers dealing with pet dog problems, we discuss the similarities, the things we enjoy and the things we don't necessarily miss in terms of our obedience club.

Joined by Amie from Canine Pawtential in Ayrshire, we delve into the topic of reactive dogs and in this episode really consider how trainers can impact clients long term, positively or negatively despite the best intentions. We do get a little ranty and are very open with our own struggles with our own dogs.

Ep5: Why collies, then?
An introduction as to why we picked the dogs that we currently have today; and as now dog trainers it may surprise you. We discuss some of our major regrets, and some of the things we are forever thankful for.
Our own dogs have completely shaped who we are as trainers and are the foundations of why House of Herders is so important to us both.

Ep4: AITA for training my dog outside?
Delving into the archives of popular Reddit thread "Am I The Asshole?" we discuss a post put forward with regards to dog training outside. The subject of reactivity can be super subjective, and sometimes you can't do right for doing wrong by some people. We discuss our own experiences of being 'trained off' and how it's caused us to change how we train.

Ep3: When throwing treats may not be the best solution
Delving into social media advice we often see recommended to deal with an unwanted approaching dog. We look at the pros and cons regarding these methods paying special attention as to why we feel that throwing food may actually create more problems than it solves, and share our own experience on what has most effectively worked for us.

Ep:1 Why won't my dog take food outside?
Discussing the general theme of why some dogs won't take food outside. Dipping out toes into arousal and reinforcement, if feeding without cause is really helpful and discussing some of our cases we have worked on where dog's food refusal has been really enlightening to us.
