Samuel Davies - 1723-1761 - One of the Greatest Preachers in Early America
In this upcoming episode of The Narrated Puritan, we journey into 18th-century colonial America to uncover the incandescent life and ministry of Samuel Davies—a man Dr. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones famously called "one of your greatest preachers." Born to humble beginnings and educated under Samuel Blair at the historic Faggs Manor academy, Davies entered pastoral ministry under the constant shadow of terminal illness, preaching every sermon with urgent, eternity-bound gravity. From navigating Virginia's rigid legal establishment to turn local "Reading Houses" into licensed Presbyterian churches, to pioneering literacy and evangelism among hundreds of enslaved African Americans, Davies' fearless leadership laid the very groundwork for religious liberty in America while inspiring the legendary pulpit fire of a young Patrick Henry. Join us as we trace his remarkable journey from the Virginia frontier to his final days succeeding Jonathan Edwards as the fourth president of the College of New Jersey, and discover why Davies' solemn, heart-searching preaching still speaks with profound power to our generation today.
