How Hernan Cortes Destroyed the Aztec Empire with 500 Men — Fexingo History

About How Hernan Cortes Destroyed the Aztec Empire with 500 Men — Fexingo History

In 1519, Hernán Cortés landed on the coast of modern-day Mexico with roughly 500 men, 16 horses, and a handful of cannon. Within two years, he had toppled the mighty Aztec Empire, a civilization of millions ruled from the dazzling island capital of Tenochtitlan. How did a tiny Spanish force achieve such a monumental conquest? This show unpacks the full story: Cortés's gamble, his manipulation of disaffected indigenous allies like the Tlaxcalans, the devastating impact of smallpox and other European diseases, and the pivotal siege of Tenochtitlan. Along the way, Lucas and Luna delve into the world of Moctezuma II, the complex Aztec tribute system, the role of La Malinche as interpreter and strategist, and the brutal 'Noche Triste' retreat. They examine the cultural misunderstandings, the psychological warfare, and the technological gaps that shaped the conflict. Beyond the battles, the show explores the long-term consequences: the destruction of indigenous religion and society, the rise of New Spain, and the enduring legacy of colonialism in the Americas. If you think you know the story of Cortés and the Aztecs, prepare to have your assumptions challenged. This is not a simple tale of European superiority, but a nuanced saga of ambition, betrayal, disease, and sheer audacity. #HernanCortes #AztecEmpire #MoctezumaII #Tenochtitlan #SpanishConquest #Mesoamerica #LaMalinche #Tlaxcalans #Smallpox #NocheTriste #NewSpain #IndigenousHistory #Colonialism #Conquistadors #SiegeWarfare #History #WorldHistory #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo (https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo)

The Aztec Human Sacrifice Rituals Explained

We explore the spiritual and political logic behind the Aztec practice of human sacrifice, moving beyond the sensationalist 'Black Legend' narratives that have long dominated Western accounts. By examining Nahuatl poetry, the Florentine Codex, and the cosmological belief in teotl (divine energy), we uncover how the Mexica viewed ritual killing not as cruelty, but as a sacred duty to sustain the sun and prevent cosmic collapse. This episode details the specific ceremonies at the Templo Mayor, the role of the eagle and jaguar warriors, and the complex social hierarchy that determined who became an offering. We also look at how this practice fueled the Flower Wars with Tlaxcala and solidified the power of the huey tlatoani, offering a nuanced view of a civilization often misunderstood through colonial eyes. #AztecSacrifice #TemploMayor #MexicaCivilization #TenochtitlanHistory #Huitzilopochtli #Tlaloc #FlorentineCodex #NahuatlPoetry #FlowerWars #XipeTotec #Coatlicue #Mesoamerica #SpanishConquest #BernalDiaz #Cortez #Cuauhtemoc #HumanRitual #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo (https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo)

Cortes's Smallpox: The Invisible Weapon That Conquered Mexico

We usually talk about swords, ships, and alliances when discussing Hernán Cortés and the fall of the Aztec Empire, but there was a fourth element that did more damage than any macuahuitl ever could. This episode explores how smallpox arrived in Tenochtitlan in 1520, carried by an enslaved African man named Juan Ortiz de Matienzo. We look at the demographic collapse that followed, where up to forty percent of the population died in weeks, creating a vacuum of leadership that paralyzed the Mexica response. Lucas and Luna discuss the biological warfare aspect that historians now recognize as central to the conquest, examining primary accounts from Bernal Díaz del Castillo and indigenous codices that describe the epidemic’s terrifying symptoms. You will hear about the specific spread of the disease through the chinampas, the death of Cuitláhuac, and how the virus preceded the Spanish forces, effectively winning the war before the siege even began. #SmallpoxEpidemic #TenochtitlanFall #HernanCortes #AztecHistory #MexicaEmpire #JuanOrtizDeMatienzo #MesoamericanDisease #BernalDiazDelCastillo #FlorentineCodex #Cuitlahuac #NocheTriste #IndigenousDemographics #ColonialMexico #BiologicalWarfare #1520Epidemic #Chinampas #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo (https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo)

The Cholula Massacre: Cortes Shocked Aztecs

Before reaching Tenochtitlan, Hernán Cortés faced a critical test of his authority and brutality in the city of Cholula. This episode explores the events of October 1519, where Cortés, accompanied by La Malinche and guided by Tlaxcalan allies, orchestrated a preemptive strike against the ruling elite of Cholula, a key tributary state of the Aztec Empire. Historians debate whether this was a justified response to a planned ambush or a calculated act of terror designed to signal the vulnerability of any city that resisted Spanish rule. We examine the role of Malintzin (Doña Marina) in uncovering the conspiracy through her linguistic skills, the scale of the slaughter that followed, and how this event reshaped the political landscape of Mesoamerica. By demonstrating that even powerful allied states could be crushed with little warning, Cortés aimed to break the psychological hold of the Mexica hegemony before he ever laid siege to their capital. #CholulaMassacre #HernanCortes #LaMalinche #AztecEmpire #MesoamericanHistory #ConquestOfMexico #Tlaxcala #Mexica #Tenochtitlan #SpanishConquest #IndigenousAllies #ColonialViolence #NahuaHistory #PreColumbian #BernalDiaz #FlorentineCodex #MilitaryStrategy #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo (https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo)
