In 2024, Kalshi won a federal court fight to let people bet on the presidential election. In 2025, it added sports. Polymarket, which had been booted from the U.S. after a settlement with regulators in 2022, found its way back. Both call themselves financial exchanges, overseen by the federal agency that regulates commodities futures, and both argue that puts them out of reach of state gambling law, which is how somebody in a state where sports betting is illegal ends up with money on a Tuesday night brewers game.
