How Ya Goin'? with Dr. Knighty

About How Ya Goin'? with Dr. Knighty

Dr. Knighty, better known as Ross from Cosmic Psychos has a brand new weekly podcast, How Ya Goin? (with Dr. Knighty). Equal parts mental health check-in and pub-style yarn, the show features honest conversations with some of his mates, who also happen to be some of the biggest names in music. Season 1 guests include Eamon Sandwith (The Chats), Donita Sparks (L7), Tim Rogers (You Am I), Scarlet McKahey (Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers) and many more. It’s warm, funny, loose, and totally unfiltered, just like the bloke hosting it. About the producer, Sam Loy: Sam is a documentary maker, podcast and radio producer, and wannabe rock star. He started making audio content as a hobby, producing the documentary show Human/Ordinary. The right people heard the show and he started getting offers for work. Since then, he's worked with the likes of Louis Theroux (The Louis Theroux Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/s2-ep7-germaine-greer-on-her-three-week-long-marriage/id1725833532?i=1000648009158)), Marc Fennel (Not Alone (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/not-alone/id1510875741) - Beyond Blue), and Alexis Fernandez (Rule Benders (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/rule-benders/id1588552061) - Samsung), and is very chuffed about making a 10 part book adaptation about an infamous 1944 plot to kill Hitler (Treason (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/treason-claus-von-stauffenberg-and-the-plot-to-kill-hitler/id1753844472)). He has enjoyed every moment of working on How Ya' Goin'?, except for driving home from Ross' farm late at night, dodging 37 kangaroos with a death wish.

How Ya Goin', Macka? (Cosmic Psychos)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the most talented and best-looking Cosmic Psycho: the star of the show, John “Mad Macka” McKeering. Macka is one of the most interesting blokes I know. Not only can he shred like no one else, but as he tells it, he’s had four careers. The first of them, was as a swimming coach. He was bloody handy as a swimmer himself, but found his calling helping others hone their craft. His second career was being a lawyer and his third was as a public servant. He’s also got a degree in political science and a master of arts in musicology. But of course, his most constant career, is as a musician. Before he started with the Psychos, he was one-third of the Brisbane band, The Onyas. They played balls-to-the-wall punk rock that didn’t give a shit what anyone thought. Which is why he slipped right in after Robbie Rocket left us. Get it inta ya. _________ How Ya Goin'? and the I REALLY LIKE BEER tour is proudly supported by Bodriggy Brewing and Heaps Normal. The best brewskies goin' 'round. Cosmic Psychos have a new album out now, called I REALLY LIKE BEER. And our Australian tour has kicked off in Melbourne and Sydney. Then we've got another 32 or so shows across the country. Plus, we’ll be hitting Europe and The States next year. How Ya Goin', Adalita? (Magic Dirt)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the guitarist and lead singer for Magic Dirt. Finding their feet at the legendary Barwon Club in Geelong, Magic Dirt were pioneers of gritty Aussie punk-rock. They’ve played with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Spiderbait, Powderfinger, and Pavement even sang about them in a song. The soundtrack to Australia is filled with Magic Dirt tracks like Dirty Jeans, Ice, and Plastic Loveless Letter. And as a solo artist, Adalita has found critical acclaim through the three albums she has made so far. She has become such an icon, such a bloody legend, that she doesn’t even need a last name for you to know who I’m talking about. Adalita came up to the farm back in August for a visit. It was still a bit chilly, so we parked ourselves in the shed right next to the fire, and has this little chat. Get it inta ya. _________ How Ya Goin'? and the I REALLY LIKE BEER tour is proudly supported by Bodriggy Brewing and Heaps Normal. The best brewskies goin' 'round. How Ya Goin', Dan Peters? (Mudhoney)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the drummer for Mudhoney. He’s one of the original members, and has been twirling his sticks with them since they started way back in 1988. Dan and I go way back. I first met him in Melbourne when I went along to see Mudhoney at the Prince of Wales. And there started a friendship that’s lasted nearly forty years. Dan was there in Seattle when grunge took the world by storm. Without Mudhoney, a lot of people reckon grunge wouldn’t have been what it was. Mudhoney have made 11 albums over the years and have played with the Psychos heaps. Dan and I are such good mates, that when I asked him to come play with us on our upcoming tour, he went straight to find his passport. We had our little chat via the wonders of modern technology back in August. How Ya Goin', Danny Beus? (Dune Rats)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the guitarist and lead singer for Dune Rats. Psychos and Dune Rats go a long way back. They’re like the little brothers we never had. I love playing with them on stage, and mucking around with them once the show’s done. Since 2010, the Dunies have released five albums, know how to make a bloody good music video clip, and regularly play their sold-out shows to hundreds and thousands of screaming fans. They even started their own label, Ratbag Records, to help other up-and-comers get their music out into the world. Danny and I caught up way back in December last year, right before he was due to take the stage. He’d recently become a dad, and was all set to shoot off overseas on a big tour. How Ya Goin', Andrew Stockdale? (Wolfmother)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the vocalist and guitarist for the mighty, psyc-rock powerhouse, Wolfmother. They've been around since 2004 and after putting out their self-titled debut album, became instantly super-famous. Their music is in TV shows, movies, your Friday night playlist, and you’ve probably got one of their tunes knocking about in your head right now. Wolfmother have released five more albums over the years and continue to tour the world playing with a bunch of awesome bands. I first met Andrew years ago when the Psychos and Wolfmother played the Pandemonium festival. We had a shared habit of not taking ourselves too seriously and we got along great. Andrew calls Byron Bay home these days, so just like last week with Scarlett, we had our little catch up chat over the interweb thing. How Ya Goin', Scarlett McKahey? (Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the guitarist for the unreal, and not at all difficult to say, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. We nearly shared a stage when Teen Jesus and the Psychos supported Pearl Jam last year. We just missed each other at a party on a super yacht in Sydney Harbour! Teen Jesus are currently setting the world on fire with their catchy and infectious punk rock. They even won an ARIA last year for Breakthrough Artist, which was bloody well-deserved. And apart from churning out the power chords and playing face-melting solos, Scarlett is the manager for her little brother’s band, Sonic Reducer. For our chat, I wasn’t able to be in the same room as Scarlett, because she lives in Canberra and has better things to do than visit me. So I asked a mate to help me operate a computer and through the wonders of modern technology, we met over Zoom. How Ya Goin', Eamon Sandwith? (The Chats)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? You’ll know my mate in this episode as the frontman and bass player for The Chats. The Psychos have been lucky to tour with The Chats a bunch of times, and hanging out with them is always a fun time. They’re one of the hardest working and creative bands I know. They’ve even won an ARIA and an APRA for how good they are at writing songs. And their frontman, Eamon is a great bloke and mate. He’s always up to something, whether it’s with the three bands he’s in, or helping others release their music with his label Bargain Bin Records. Eamon came up to visit us on the farm back in March and stayed the night. We got ourselves a couple of cans, sat down in the shed, and had this chat. How Ya Goin'? with Dr. Knighty - Donita Sparks (L7)

G’day, welcome to How Ya Goin’? The legend in this episode is the lead singer and guitarist for L7. They’ve been around since the mid-80s, which makes em almost as old as the Psychos. They’ve released seven studio albums over the years, with the latest coming in 2019. Their music is everywhere in movies and tv, and as a band they used their platform to fight for abortion rights back in the 90s. But as an individual, my mate Donita has been a solo artist with her band Donita Sparks and the Stellar Moments and she’s always got her finger in some artistic pie or another. It was way back in early December that we had this chat. L7 were out doing some festival shows and Donita was nice enough to meet up at her hotel in Melbourne, even though she’d just got off an 18 hour flight. How Ya Goin'? with Dr. Knighty - Tim Rogers

Welcome to the first episode of How Ya Going? The bloke in this episode is the frontman for You Am I and more recently the Hard-ons. But he’s also got a cracking solo career going and seems to be playing music all over the place as well as popping up in Hollywood movies and on the tele. He’s an ARIA winner, both as a solo artist and heaps with You Am I, a North Melbourne footy club tragic, and he’s even written a book about his life. He’s ditched the city life for the countryside the last few years, and he doesn’t live too far from me now. Welcome to the neighbourhood, Tim. It was a sunny day in late February when Tim came out to my farm for a visit. I showed him around, and then we set ourselves up in my shed for a sit down and a chat. On Tour With The Psychos

Published 18 Jan 2026 · Transcript excerpt

[…] There's no doubt some downtime in all of that. But his time never seems to be really his. Sometimes there's no days off. Like I've done four shows in four days, like Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, all driving. That's basically since 2013 I've been touring. Someone's a thing I'm a workaholic. He's been doing tours with the Psychos since 2018. I suspect he feels it's a privilege to be doing what he's doing, and he loves most minutes of it. Psychos are a lot of fun, and I enjoy the experience that you see people like in the crowd just smiling and having a great time, and you think, my day is working hard, but then we make everyone else's life because they go to work day in day out, and we provide the entertainment for them to be able to keep going too, and make their life entertaining.
