欧洲议会6月17日批准了新基因组植物（NGTs）的种植，从而结束了长达四年的立法僵局。所谓新转基因作物指的是使用分子剪刀对同一个植物进行基因改造后培育的植物，同传统转基因植物不同的是，它并没有被植入其他植物的基因，因此，对支持该技术的人来说，这与传统的转基因植物不可同日而语，然而，对反对者来说，虽然新转基因植物可以提高作物的抗旱性和抗病性，但是，它们归根揭底是转基因植物，依然有可能对自然环境以及人类健康产生重大的负面影响。这就是为社么欧洲议会在两年前的一次相关讨论中提出必须对新转基因植物产品贴上标签，然而，在周三的最终表决中，上述条件却遭到了删除。
