楊誠齋夫人羅氏，年七十餘，每寒月黎明即起，詣廚躬作粥一釜，遍享奴婢，然後使之服役。其子東山先生啟曰：「天寒何自苦如此？」夫人曰：「奴婢亦人子也。清晨寒冷，須使其腹中略有火氣，乃堪服役耳。」東山曰：「夫人老，且賤事，何倒行而逆施乎？」夫人怒曰：「我自樂此，不知寒也。汝為此言，必不能如吾矣！」東山守吳興，夫人嘗於郡圃種佇，躬紡緝以為衣，時年蓋八十餘矣。東山月俸，分以奉母。夫人忽小疾，既愈，出所積券，曰：「此長物也，自吾積此，意不樂，果致疾。今宜悉以謝醫，則吾無事矣。」平居首飾止於銀，衣止於綢絹。生四子三女，悉自乳，曰：「饑人之子，以哺吾子，是誠何心哉？」誠齋父子，視金玉如糞土。誠齋將漕江東，有俸給僅萬緡，留庫中，棄之而歸。東山帥五羊，以俸錢七千緡，代下戶輸租。其家採椽土階，如田舍翁，三世無增飾。東山病且死，無衣衾，適廣西帥趙季仁饋纈絹數端。東山曰：「此賢者之賜也，衾材無憂矣。」史良叔守廬陵，官滿來訪。入其門，升其堂，目之所見，無非可敬可仰、可師可法者，所得多矣，因命畫工圖之而去。誠齋、東山清介絕俗，固皆得之天資，而婦道母儀所助亦已多矣。

王覺一，諱希孟，號覺一，原籍山東人，三歲喪父，七歲喪母，十二歲為劉府牧羊，即著有「嘆五更」。 《證道歌》原文： 「大道分明在心頭 有作有為盡下流 識得當前真淨土 萬部丹經一筆勾 凡情已了夜得燈 不隱不現真性宗 勸君休撈水中月 一輪皓月在當空 修行大眾理看穿 休泥丹田與玄關 真性心中無定所 佛在心頭無影山 玄關一竅引誘人 及到彼岸捨此心 人生壽限難滿百 何不早早將師尋」 「人情世事如水波 一腳跳出是非窩 自在菩薩常常守 五蘊皆空為大羅 萬法皆空無去來 那有酒色與氣財 世人先理後來死 未見先死後來埋」 「人心不悟夜無燈 真性不復有何能 百尺竿頭再進步 光明寂照處處通 念盡不起有何言 靈靈惺惺樂自然」 「浮雲不起紅日現 何嘗有心去尋明 有心尋明明不明 出離此籠入彼籠 自覺自身無塵垢 那知還在泥水坑」

薛瑄，字德溫，號敬軒，山西河津縣人，明朝理學家。 《讀書錄》卷三 提到：「人亦有此理，我亦有此理，人不能全，而我能之，視不能全者憫憐之可也，鄙笑之不可也；引掖之可也，棄絶之不可也。」 我們都有別人不及之處，也有不及別人之處，各有所長。 發揮自己的優點長處去幫助人，而非以己之長，攻人之短。
