About I'd Tell Myself
Have you ever wondered how the choices we make as young adults truly shape the path one takes in life? There's so much messaging about "making the right choices" or "setting yourself up for success", but what if you feel pulled in an unconventional direction? What if life takes you down an unexpected path? What if the opportunities available for you to pursue are limited by circumstance or responsibility? We often take for granted the perception that people in positions of influence or power got there through a clear-cut path. However, if you take the time to get to know them and hear their stories, you’ll find most people traveled a unique and interesting road that only makes sense in hindsight. The specific set of experiences, mistakes, lessons and support that made them qualified to do the work they are doing today could not have been planned. I’m conducting a series of interviews to bridge the difference between what we assume and what people’s experiences are really like. One of the goals is to normalize this reality, the other is to learn from the shared experiences of those who have already made it to a place on their journey that looks like success. What challenges and unusual experiences did people find along the way? How can their lessons be useful to others?

Turning Struggles Into Strengths to Build a Life You Love with Nicole Barham
In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nicole Barham, the founder of Design Your Wealth and the creator of the 5-Minute Bookkeeper. Nicole shared her incredible journey with us, starting from her early days in rural Jamaica to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Nicole's story is one of resilience and determination. She spoke about her initial dreams of becoming a lawyer and how her grandmother's suggestion to pursue accounting instead planted a seed that would later flourish into her career. Despite her grandmother's humorous distrust of lawyers, Nicole found her passion in numbers and finance. She detailed her path through education in Jamaica, where she chose the business track in high school and later worked with the Jamaican government in their accounting department. After moving to the United States, Nicole's career took a slight detour, but she eventually found her way back to finance and entrepreneurship. Nicole candidly shared the challenges she faced, including a period of financial distress that led to bankruptcy. This experience, while difficult, became a turning point in her life. It inspired her to take control of her finances and eventually led to the creation of the 5-Minute Bookkeeper, a tool designed to help entrepreneurs manage their finances with ease. Her journey wasn't just about financial success; it was also deeply personal. Nicole opened up about how building a successful business has allowed her to provide for her family in new ways that better meet their needs, while getting to spend more time with them instead of sitting in traffic. Nicole's story is a testament to the power of turning one's struggles into strengths. Common Threads: Season 1 Wrap-Up
In this final episode of season 1 I wrap up the valuable lessons we learned from our guests in the previous 5 episodes. This season, we spoke with five amazing individuals from a variety of different industries. Each of them has achieved a fair amount of success in their careers, and we wanted to know, what was your journey to get here? What are the unexpected or odd things that you gathered through experiences that you couldn't have predicted? How were you shaped to be uniquely qualified for this position? I've asked a lot of questions. And the truth is that each of these episodes is a conversation driven by curiosity and a fascination with the choices people make, the paths we choose, and how they influence our lives. I'm grateful to each of our guests for sharing a part of themselves with us. From these episodes I was able to find five core messages and one special lesson: Be kind and act with integrity, know your values, pay attention, be the best at what you do, in part by knowing your strengths, ask for help, stay open to possibility, and be willing to receive opportunities. And the bonus, be out for something greater than yourself.

Do Your Own Work First: The Importance of Personal Work in Leadership Development w/ Cassandra Goodman
In this episode we're talking with Cassandra Goodman. She's the founder of the Center for Self Fidelity and has held roles as a Lean Six Sigma leader, customer and operational experience leader, and global director of employee experience at companies like GE, Origin Energy, and Bupa. Cassandra had a lot to share with us about her journey, from realizing the ways in which she was undervaluing herself and the effect that was having on how she showed up as a leader, to the importance of seeking out places where you can be yourself and do good work with good people. When asked what she’d tell her younger self Cassandra said: “I'd want to tell my younger, former self that you are enough, you're enough because of who you are, the unique energy that you bring to your work and to the world, that's enough, that you don't have to do or have accolades and gold stars , that you're enough. I think that's the first thing. And I think the other thing I would say is, you know, the older you get, the more you're going to realize that at the end of the day, it's about doing good work with good people. And the more you can just focus on that, on doing good work that matters with good people around you. And I think the third bit of advice would be that loving what you do is not enough unless you also love who you're being while you do it. Everyone's Human: Lessons on Ambition and Integrity with Judge Frison

And move even faster because life is short and whatever it is you're aiming to do while you're on this planet, you gotta get to doing it early. And you don't know all your steps. So nothing is really too early. I think particularly talking to myself as a young black student, I would definitely say, don't hold yourself back thinking that you've got to take baby steps. Welcome to I'd Tell Myself. I'm your host Danielle Frankel. Have you ever wondered how the choices we make as young adults truly shape the path one takes in life? There's so much messaging about "making the right choices" or "setting yourself up for success", but what if you feel pulled in an unconventional direction? What if life takes you down an unexpected path? What if the opportunities available for you to pursue are limited by circumstance or responsibility? We often take for granted the perception that people in positions of influence or power got there through a clear-cut path. However, if you take the time to get to know them and hear their stories, you’ll find most people traveled a unique and interesting road that only makes sense in hindsight. The specific set of experiences, mistakes, lessons and support that made them qualified to do the work they are doing today could not have been planned. Curious about who people are, why they do what they do, how they grow & change, and how they help each other, I've spent my career focusing on the people side of business. In each role I've worked on creating healthier work environments and opportunities, supporting people through major transitions, and working 1:1 with individuals invested in their personal development. These conversations are an extension of my curiosity, and of my belief that one of the ways we can help each other is by sharing parts of our lives and experiences. I’m conducting a series of interviews to bridge the difference between what we assume and what people’s experiences are really like. One of the goals is to normalize this reality, the other is to learn from the shared experiences of those who have already made it to a place on their journey that looks like success. What challenges and unusual experiences did people find along the way? How can their lessons be useful to others?
