[…] Sometimes it's a total failure, and I have to unstretch the canvas and start over. There's this word called pentimento, which is specifically applied to when artists have painted something and then painted over it. but you can still see the faint traces from a light source hitting it. You could see, oh, maybe they moved the hand from being farther down to being upright. And so pentimento, it's an Italian word that literally means to change one's mind or to repent. But within art history and art conservation, it's about this idea of a painting having this history of being repainted. And that's become a thing in my practice where I'm like, I'm doing gestures knowing that these ghostly past motions will then come forth a little bit. […]
