[…] It was a major iron producing region. And what happened, that brought in a lot of skilled and trained craftsmen and workers to work those iron furnaces. By 1850, there were 55 iron works in the Juniata district. And here you can see some of the early ones were late 1700s and it went through the mid 1850s and later. Another feature about Huntington is it was a good portion, like I said, with the Native American trails, the Huntington was a corridor traveling east to west crossing the Allegheny Mountains. You can see where Huntington is shown in yellow and the Juniata Valley and the Juniata River gave a good passage route connecting Eastern Pennsylvania to the frontier. […]
