Who Told You You Had to Fit?

You mention something you enjoy, somebody questions it, and suddenly you’re defending your entire personality. When did liking an old cartoon start requiring a presentation?I have a tattoo of Alice from the Disney cartoon, and Wonderland has become more familiar as I’ve gotten older. In this episode, I use Alice’s changing size and the absurd rules she encounters to explore people-pleasing, neurodivergence, and the effort of constantly adjusting yourself around other people.Sometimes the person whose approval you’re trying to earn isn’t even in your life anymore. Their opinion has become a rule you keep enforcing yourself. Through Alice in Wonderland, we look at how to question those rules, trust our own experience, and remain open to an honest correction. What would it feel like to enjoy something without preparing your defense?Wherever you’re reading this, you can find more of my work on other platforms by searching “Idiot Mystic.” Look for me on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you prefer to watch and listen.Come hang out and continue the conversation:Discord: https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmMWebsite: https://idiotmystic.comBlog: https://idiotmystic.com/blogYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@idiotmysticInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/idiotmysticTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@idiotmystic

The Odd Fellows: The Secret Society That Promised to Bury You

There are old buildings all over America with three interlocking chain links carved into the stone. There are cemeteries filled with the same symbol. And sometimes, when abandoned Odd Fellows lodges are opened up decades later, people find actual human skeletons inside. So who were the Odd Fellows? At their height, millions of people belonged to this almost-forgotten fraternal order built around Friendship, Love, and Truth. They had secret signs, initiation rituals, degrees, ceremonial regalia, mutual-aid funds, funerary traditions, women’s organizations, Black parallel orders, and a surprisingly practical promise: Visit the sick. Relieve the distressed. Bury the dead. Educate the orphan. In this episode of Idiot Mystic, we follow the Odd Fellows from Thomas Wildey’s 1819 meeting in a Baltimore tavern into one of the largest fraternal movements in the world. We get into the real human skeletons used in initiation ceremonies, their strange symbolism, their relationship to Freemasonry, the Rebekahs, Peter Ogden and the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, religious controversy, racial exclusion, mutual aid, death rituals, and why these enormous organizations almost disappeared from everyday life. Underneath all the strange imagery is an idea that feels surprisingly radical now: What if friendship came with actual obligations? What if somebody getting sick meant you were expected to visit? What if somebody dying meant you were expected to show up? And what did we lose when communities stopped organizing themselves that way? Suddenly, I Record a Podcast Every Day

In this episode, I talk about the weird moment when you realize something has sneakily become your life. It was just like one day looking up and realizing, somehow, you record a podcast every day now. This is an episode about consistency, routine, creative practice, and the less glamorous truth of showing up. Not fake motivational consistency or the polished self-help version. The weird version. The repetitive version. The version where you keep doing the thing long enough that it starts doing something to you. We talk about discipline, identity, ritual, and the odd little ways a life gets built almost by accident. If you’ve ever wondered how something becomes part of you, this one might be for you. <3 Come hang out and continue the conversation: 🌐 Website: https://idiotmystic.com (https://idiotmystic.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com) 📝 Blog: https://idiotmystic.com/blog (https://idiotmystic.com/blog) 📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@idiotmystic (https://www.youtube.com/@idiotmystic) 📷 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/idiotmystic (https://www.instagram.com/idiotmystic) 🎵 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@idiotmystic (https://www.tiktok.com/@idiotmystic) 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmM (https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmM) 🎧 You can also find Idiot Mystic on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen to podcasts by searching Idiot Mystic.
