Karen was a successful marketing executive rushing to a business meeting when she noticed an elderly homeless woman sitting alone. Her shoulders sagged. Her eyes were dull. Karen could have kept walking. Instead, she crossed the street. She bought her a sandwich. She bought her orange juice. And she stopped to listen. Her name was Millie. That brief encounter became the spark that transformed Karen’s life. She went on to dedicate herself to helping people in need and founded Family Promise, a national nonprofit organization supporting homeless and low-income families.
In her powerful book, Meant for More: Following Your Heart and Finding Your Purpose, Karen shares her journey from childhood tragedy to a life rooted in compassion, purpose, service, and hope. Her message is simple, but profound: We can spend our lives chasing success, status, and things… and still feel empty. Or we can look beyond ourselves. We can show up. We can listen. We can serve. We can choose kindness. And sometimes, when we reach out to make a difference in someone else’s life, happiness finds us along the way.
