In this final episode of our first season of IMBY, Rachel Sturgess takes a closer look at the corridor of land set aside by KiwiRail that winds through Onehunga.
After the Auckland Light Rail decided against the use of this corridor, the government has now indicated that they might push ahead with heavy rail along that route anyway. This raises questions about the land's value, ecological significance, and historical relevance.
Matt Lowry from Greater Auckland speaks to the merits of the use of the land for heavy rail, while local residents Paul and Echo Janman from Onehunga Peoples Garden shed light on the importance of retaining this green space, its role in mitigating environmental impacts, and the land's historical heritage.

Contributors highlight the need for visionary leadership and a long-term perspective to tackle complex issues like climate change and urban congestion.
They stress the importance of a bipartisan approach to transportation policies, emphasizing that solutions like light rail or other mass transit options should be prioritized over short-term political gains.

Cost, Disruption and Opportunity
In this episode we explore the expense and disruption caused by the light rail initiative.
Critics argue that the proposed tunneled route significantly adds to the cost, making it nearly twice as expensive as similar projects worldwide. Despite the financial burden, proponents of tunneling emphasize the potential benefits such as increased future capacity, urban regeneration, and enhanced connectivity within the city.
The ultimate goal is to enhance the livability of the city and minimize environmental impact, even if it necessitates a considerable initial investment. Delivering on that vision will require a forward-thinking approach, considering the long-term benefits and opportunities that a well-planned light rail system could bring to Auckland.

TRAILER: Investigating the Auckland Light Rail project and its local impact
Have you ever been called a NIMBY? - One of those people who reflexively say of big developments “Not In My Back Yard, thank you very much!”
Or perhaps you think of yourself as more of a YIMBY? "Yes In My Back Yard, bring it on!”
Well, I think each of us would probably say it really depends what you’re talking about.
I’m Rachel Sturges and in this brand new podcast from Onehunga FM, I’ll be taking a closer look at big developments and infrastructure projects being planned in my back yard.
As the former editor of the Onehunga Community News, I spent 6 years following various developments in the neighbourhood… and one of the biggest proposals has been the Auckland Light Rail project.
The plan is for the ARL to come right through Onehunga. So, in this first season of IMBY, I’m doing a deep dive into
what actually is light rail?
where its route could go,
how will it affect urban growth, congestion and climate
what are the merits and concerns around the project, and
will it ever stop being a political football?
So, follow IMBY on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you find your favourite podcasts.
Have a listen, and make up your own mind!
After all, it’s happening in your back yard too.
